It’s likely you may not learn the name of the farmer who grew the arugula or harvested the honey 🍯 you just bought … unless you’re shopping at a farmers market. 👨🌾
Some farmers markets in the Kansas City metro area stay open year-round, such as the City Market. There are also ones that offer an indoor winter location, like the Brookside Farmers Market and the City of Independence Uptown Market.
But in April and May, the markets get into full swing in Kansas and in Missouri — and the season stretches into September or October.
These days, it’s not just fresh fruits, vegetables 🥕 and herbs for sale. 🌿 Look for freshly baked goods, meats and cheese, and eggs — as well as cut flowers 💐 and plants, soap and body care products, crafts and more.
State and county COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place: Masks are required, vendors are spaced out and shoppers will be asked to practice physical distancing. A debit/credit card 💳 is suggested, but it’s always helpful to have cash on hand, too. 💵
Here are a few markets to check out. ✔️

The Overland Park Farmers Market got its start nearly 40 years ago.
The market innovated in 2020 during the early days of the pandemic and in the first part of the season, with a drive-through market at the Overland Park Convention Center (and their efforts were featured in The New York Times). The market hosted a record 95 vendors who travel from within a 125-mile radius, including ones from Overland Park (check out its Facebook page for detailed information about 2021 vendors).
This season the market’s venue is in a new downtown Overland Park location: Matt Ross Community Center, as an open-air, distanced, walk-up market.
Look for vendors selling items for lunch, such as Wiener Wagon’s specialty hot dogs. 🌭 And don’t miss Fairway Creamery’s fresh-baked donuts. 🍩
Overland Park Farmers Market is open Saturdays, April 17-Sept. 25, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and Oct. 2-Nov. 20, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. It's also open Wednesdays starting June 2-Sept. 29, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The Lenexa Farmers Market is tucked into the bottom floor of the parking garage of the Lenexa civic campus.
Vendors sell fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs 🍳, baked goods, flowers and more — all raised, grown and made within 250 miles of the market. Also look for gourmet dog treats 🐶, cold-pressed juices, fresh salsa in small batches, and low-carb mini loaf cakes and cookies. 🍪
Lots of vendors are there each week during the season, but check the weekly market map for changes before you go.
Free parking will be available on the upper floors of the garage. 🚗
Lenexa Farmers Market is open Saturdays, April 24-Oct. 30, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and Tuesdays, June 1-Aug. 31, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The first hour is reserved for at-risk shoppers.

The vendors sell a wide variety of locally grown fruits 🍓 and vegetables, meats, eggs, honey, jams and jellies, as well as baked goods and other sweet treats. 🍞
Stop by Santa Fe Trail Honey Farm for honey stix, and Thelma Louise Creations for handmade aprons, towels and bags. Or try Tarra’s Gluten-Free Goodies for cupcakes and muffins. 🧁

The Merriam Farmers Market starts its season each year on the first Saturday in May.
The vendors set up shop in the Merriam Marketplace, a covered pavilion along the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail — four miles of paved trails through wooded areas, a butterfly garden and parks, from 75th Street to Antioch Road. 🏞️ A bridge along the trail serves as the access point to the market.
Look for fresh produce, plants, herbs, baked goods, handmade arts and crafts and more.
Merriam Farmers Market is open Saturdays, May 1-Sept. 25, 7 a.m.-1 p.m. The first hour is reserved for at-risk shoppers.
