A Note from the President

Dear Tiger Parents,
As a parent, I know you’re concerned about recent news articles focused on the state’s budget. Like you, we want to ensure the state maintains its level of commitment to your Tiger. We are telling legislators that LSU students are performing at the highest levels nationally and that LSU’s operations more efficient – two things they should want to support.
Your children made the right decision coming to LSU. Here are two headlines demonstrating LSU’s recent achievements that may have gotten lost in the flurry of budget coverage:
-     LSU played a major role in proving Einstein’s Theory of Relativity through the recent detection of gravitational waves at our LIGO facility in Livingston Parish. This discovery represents more than 40 years of scientific study and is widely heralded as the most important scientific event of the year, if not the decade.
-     Three LSU students were named finalists for the prestigious and nationally competitive Truman Scholarship. Truman Scholars are offered up to $30,000 for graduate study and are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of their graduate work. Recipients will be announced on April 22.
This is just a sample of what our university is doing not just for our students and for science. Student Government’s Student Advocacy Commission and the Alumni Association’s Tiger Advocates are both doing an exceptional job of educating our legislators about the importance of LSU so they will understand higher education is an investment and not an expense. If we all speak with one voice, we can make a difference.
As always, thank you for trusting us with your Tiger.

LSU Academic Programs Abroad

One of the largest concerns about studying abroad for many LSU families is the length of stay for their students. Some students are more adventurous than others, and have little reservations about leaving home for long periods of time. I was not one of these students. I was born and raised in New Orleans and moved to Baton Rouge to begin my LSU career. I never had the desire to be farther than an hour and a half away from my family, and my mom completely agreed. However, because I am a French major, she really encouraged me to study abroad for a little while to try to improve my French speaking skills. We both researched and took a closer look into APA programs, and we finally settled on the LSU in Paris Summer Program.
After reading more about it, we both decided that the structure of the summer programs was much better for our comfort level. LSU faculty travel with each program and teach LSU courses – just in another country. We had both a Parent and a Student orientation where we got all the information we would need for the trip. The faculty were very diligent in telling us all about the risks, how best to avoid them, and how to stay smart throughout the trip. When I got there the first day, I immediately regretted my decision. I got off the plane, realized I didn’t have my parents to follow around, and thought “Ok, how do I get back on this plane”. But a quick phone conversation with my mom reminded me I was probably just jet lagged and a little exhausted, so I should get some sleep. The second day of the trip, the program director gave us a scavenger hunt throughout the city, so we could familiarize ourselves with the metro system and the city in general. As soon as they announced it was a competition, I knew I had to win. (I come from a very competitive family, so winning was the only option). By the end of the day, we had gotten lost more times than I could count, but we had seen the entire city in one day. It was such a relief to know that I could navigate an entire city by myself. I was so proud to tell my family that I had gotten adjusted to my new surroundings. I continued to have the best 5 weeks of my entire life. We studied the history of Paris in class, and then took day trips to the exact sites we had just learned about. We ate some of the most delicious food of my entire life. We travelled together on the weekends in small groups to other parts of France, and sometimes to other European countries. Now I can say, after having done LSU in Paris, I am a much more independent, easy going, and adventurous person than I ever thought I could be. Studying abroad has profoundly changed my experience at LSU, and I hope that each LSU student has the opportunity to have the same experience!
*Emily Grefer is a senior Marketing and French major, graduating this semester. After graduation, she will pursue her master’s degree in International Marketing at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

 Important Safety Information

A new, free smart phone app, called LSU SHIELD, is now available to the LSU community. Available for both iOS and Android operating systems, LSU SHIELD is designed to help students, faculty and staff report emergencies or crimes, receive help from police, or simply check on each other to ensure they've arrived safely at their destinations or returned safely from class, their workouts, or other outings.

1. If you see something, say something:
If you see something suspicious on campus, please report it! We want to hear from you, and you can even report suspicious behavior anonymously. Call LSU Police at 225-578-3231 or learn more.

2. Bookmark LSU's homepage:
Everything from safety messages and severe weather alerts to what's happening around campus can be found at LSU's homepage.

3. Safety messages from the LSU Police Department:
Stay informed of campus safety issues by visiting the LSU Police Department's website and liking LSU PD's Facebook page. To reach LSU PD by phone, dial 225-578-3231 or if it's an emergency, dial 911.

4. Don't Be a Zombie:
Use caution walking and driving on campus, especially in crosswalks. More information!

5. Take a shuttle at night:
Instead of walking around campus at night, take LSU's free shuttle known as Campus Transit

6. Emergency Text Messages from LSU
Your students should make sure that they have registered their personal cell-phones with the Emergency Text Messaging System. Students can register via their myLSU account. Only faculty, staff, and students will receive an emergency text message in case of an immediate safety issue on campus.
