Interview with President Ross Plourde
by Emily Stratton

For a number of years I have been invited to interview our current Rotary president at the end of his or her term for an article in our Rotary newsletter. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. You will love reading below about Ross Plourde’s experiences as our president.

What is your first memory of Rotary?
I went to a Rotary Club meeting with Burns Hargis some time in the mid-1980s.  I really don’t remember that much about the meeting other than the sense of camaraderie and community that seemed to pervade the meeting.  I grew up in a small town and the thing that I missed about it was the sense of belonging, of knowing most of the people I met, and sharing not only a common past but a future.
What brought you into Club 29?
I saw what Club 29 had done for the community in the past and what Rotary International had accomplished in the world, and those things aligned with my priorities.  I knew many people who were members of Club 29, liked every one of them, and wanted to be a part of the same organization with them. And that sense of camaraderie and community that I sensed as a visitor about 10 years earlier.
Looking back over your year, do you have a favorite Rotary activity?
I truly enjoy the meetings, the weekly meetings, Rotary After Hours, Breakfast Meetings when I get to attend, and even board and committee meetings.  I enjoy interacting with really intelligent, caring and committed people who don’t mind sharing a laugh while getting something accomplished

Announcements

Membership Dues Increase- July 1, 2026

For those paying quarterly, dues will increase $5.00 per quarter, or $365. For those paying annually, dues will increase to $1460.
The cost of everything is going up, including the expenses we incur as a club. At the last club board meeting, the board voted to raise dues by $5.00 per quarter. That won't cover all our increasing cost, but it will help. We are looking for alternatives to keep dues down going forward.

Volunteer Opportunity - July 20-25

Several Rotarians have asked about volunteering at the 2026 ICF Canoe Slalom and Kayak Cross World Championships July 20-25 at Riversport.  If you would like to do this, please register.

Rotary Magazine - June 2026 - for Rotarian Subscibers

In a favorite yearly ritual, Rotary editors each spring pore over your entries to the magazine's Photo Awards. This year's crop was especially strong, including our joyful cover image of the ecstatic moment when a child splashes in the ocean for the first time. These 13 images, capturing everyday moments, demonstrate that sometimes the ordinary is most extraordinary.
'Tis the season for summer road trips. In another of this month's features, we take you to America's Mother Road, the fabled Route 66, on its 100th birthday to tell the little-known story of the person credited with its creation. Spoiler: He was a Rotarian.

Also, it's been more than a year since wildfires devasted parts of the Los Angeles area. In the Our World section, read about the Rotary members focused on rebuilding a sense of community and optimism — including by coloring the somber landscape with bright orange poppies.

Finally, have you ever wondered why you feel a connection with an engaging storyteller? Neuroscience can explain. Learn how stories bind us together in this month's Handbook.
