Graduate Student Spotlight: Amy Loy, Architecture
Amy Loy, a master’s student in the College of Architecture and Design, is examining how human experience is impacted by natural processes and how that informs structure and design. Whether it is how sunlight filters into a space or how water moves and sounds, Loy is looking for ways to design spaces that lead to improved health and wellness.

Mark DeKay, professor in the School of Architecture, has been researching people’s disconnection from nature. Now, with support from a 2021 Chancellor’s Grant for Faculty Research, DeKay will be able to accelerate both the research and the acquisition of external funding for the work.

Researchers at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture have received a $423,316 grant from USDA NIFA to study food loss and waste reduction at the consumer-grocery retailer interface. Study results could impact the design of food loss programs as well as landfill inputs. 
University of Tennessee students exhibited creativity designing floating wetlands
UT architecture design studio students were tasked with reimagining structures in four major US cities: Detroit, New York City, Miami Beach, and Los Angeles. They were asked to focus on adaptive reuse of the buildings—repurposing structures originally built for different purposes.
