New BioSci chair appointed

Karolina Mukhtar is a broadly trained molecular plant biologist with over 20 years’ experience studying various aspects of plant genetics and stress biology using genetic and biochemical approaches. She’s also the new chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, effective July 1.

Leading with his heart

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Junior biochemistry major Thomas Caputo wanted to do something to raise awareness of the disease, so he founded the Clemson Heart Association.

Woven into her DNA

Junior genetics major Elizabeth Caldwell was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome — a group of disorders that affect connective tissues supporting the skin, bones, blood vessels and many other organs and tissues. It’s a driving motivation for the Truman Scholarship finalist’s area of study, research and future aspirations.

College of Science Alumni Spring Break Lunch Drop-in

The College of Science is holding a drop-in during the Clemson University Alumni Spring Break on March 22 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Tiger Town Tavern, 368 College Avenue, Clemson. Come gather with some fellow SCIENCE Tigers, College of Science leadership, faculty and faculty emeriti. Register for the lunch here.

DECAL event addresses machine learning impact, potential threats

Machine learning is transforming a wide range of fields, but advances in analytics and data capturing may also pose potential privacy or security threats. To address those, the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences held DECAL (Data Security and Machine Learning), a two-day event featuring research and interaction with industry partners. The event was funded through the College of Science Faculty Excellence Interdisciplinary Enhancement Program.

Astronomers discover heavy elements after gamma-ray burst

Clemson astrophysicist Dieter Hartmann was among an international team of scientists that obtained observational evidence for the creation of rare heavy elements in the aftermath of a cataclysmic explosion triggered by the merger of two neutron stars.

Tigers on Call, an event that connects Clemson students who are interested in heath care professions with members of the Clemson Family working professionally in the field, will be held April 4-5.
