Spring is here, and it's time to welcome the gardening season with open arms! Whether you're growing flowers, vegetables, or herbs, there’s nothing like feeling the sun on your face and the soil in your hands. Every seed we plant is a fresh start—and a promise of beauty and growth to come.

Gardening brings us closer to nature, lifts our spirits and even helps build community with the Scattered Garden program.

Whether you're tending a backyard plot or a windowsill garden, now’s the perfect time to celebrate the joy of growing something new, while supporting food security right here in our community.

Save the date for May 16, 17 and 18 for our big plant start giveaway!

Every year Neighborhood House's volunteer garden crew organizes this event to help jump start your Scattered Garden. We'll have hundreds of plants available, from everything from tomatoes, squash, jalapenos, beans, herbs and so much more - all for FREE.

If you have extra plant starts to donate, please let us know! We rely on growers large and small to make this event a success. If you germinated too many seeds this season, bring them in to share the wealth.

We also have a TON of seeds to share at the giveaway thanks to Portland Nursery, Dennis' 7 Dees and Scattered Garden friends and members.

Plants, seeds and gardening advice will all be available outside Neighborhood House, 7780 SW Capitol Highway. Stay tuned for more information about the giveaway!

Garden volunteer Karen Galloway has lots of tips on how flowers can add value to your garden for better pollination. 

Pollinators are nearly as important as sun, soil and water in both flowering plant production and in production of 75% of the fruits and vegetables that feed us. A showy blend of flowers will surely charm bees. Butterflies add glorious color and fragrance and truly foster a healthy ecosystem.  These tips and recommendations may be useful.

We joined the Multnomah Village Earth Day celebration with seed planting fun. Kids decorated a pot, filled it with dirt and seeds of their choice to start their own mini garden.

1. If you don’t yet have a garden growing, our Plant Start Giveaway has lots of veggie starts for free! Tomatoes in many varieties, eggplant, several types of squash, tomatillos, broccoli, kale, peppers and much more.

2. As plants ripen, pick and use what you need for you and your family, then donate the rest. As many of us know only too well, even a small garden can grow an abundant supply - often so much more than we can use.

3. Bring your extra bounty to the Free Food Market. Friendly and helpful volunteers will weigh it and help fill out a donation slip.

Please be sure to write “Scattered Garden” on the slip!
