Five JMC students selected for 2025 Millennium Fellowship |

More than 60,000 students from 7,500 institutions worldwide applied for the 2025 Millennium Fellowship, which had an acceptance rate of about 7%. Among those who earned the fellowship are five students from the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Each of them will complete a semester-long project.
Among the programs, more than 4,000 students, who together represent more than 290 campuses in 47 nations, are the following KU JMC School student fellows:
Taylor Doyle, Antoniqué Flemons, Jaden Huehl, Hannah Loub and Sydney Wynia.

Fall 2025 Student Success Series: This week’s session, Time Management, is for any student who wants to improve their ability to manage multiple priorities and balance their time. Topics will range from using planners and academic calendars effectively, behavioral and lifestyle modification and intentional planning to help you achieve your goals. Join us this Wednesday, Sept 10, from 3-4 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery, first floor Stauffer-Flint Hall.
Next week will have not one, but two sessions! "Reading & Note-Taking" will focus on how to effectively engage in reading and note-taking before, during and after class. If you are wondering how to tackle the assigned readings or want to better understand and retain information from textbooks, this workshop is for you. "Exam Preparation" will give you tips on effective preparation for exams, such as making a study plan, identifying what to study and maintaining your personal well-being.

JMC hosts high school students for a workshop: During the SJMC Creators workshop, students experienced a day in the life of a J-School student. They listened to a lecture on social media’s use across the JMC School concentrations from Assistant Professor Sarah Cavanah (with a guest portion about sports social media from Assistant Professor Steve Bien-Aime), walked to the Ambler Student Recreation Center to take photos and videos and showcased their finished social posts to the group.
Entrepreneur Craig Mason met with JMC 645 Media Arts & Production Capstone students on Sept. 3 to discuss his new AI startup, Myndset. The Myndset app leverages AI insights to support individuals’ mental health and wellness. Students in the class are collaborating with Myndset to develop its brand and auxiliary media.
Chandler Brandes, director of communications for the KC Current, shared her experiences as a sports communications professional with JMC 430 (Communicating Sports Information) last Friday. A student-athlete at Vermont, Chandler spent time in the media relations/sports information offices at the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky, and the University of North Carolina before taking on the role with the Current early this year.
Attend Digital Women conference in Kansas City: The DIMC Program has one complimentary conference registration to the Digital Women-Kansas City MiniCon on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. This event is from 8 am to 4 pm and will be at the BEST Conference Center on the KU Edwards campus. If you have an interest in attending, please email Dr. Michelle Keller (mkeller@ku.edu) by Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 5 pm. If more than one person requests the registration, we will draw a name from all interested parties and contact the winner on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

FleishmanHillard leader available to connect with students: Liz Hawks, Global Head of Influencer Relations at FleishmanHillard, will be available to connect with KU students during a meet and greet between 3:30-4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9, in the Stauffer-Flint lobby. Hawks received a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications from KU.
The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWM Foundation) Scholarship Program has a new scholarship opportunity, The AWM Foundation & NCTA – The Internet and Television Association Scholarship. The chosen student will receive a scholarship to their educational institution for $10,000 and a ticket to attend the Gracies Leadership Awards in New York City on Nov. 18. The deadline to apply is Sept. 26. Check out more details and apply here.
Learn how to discuss controversial news stories and earn $50: The study will take place on the Lawrence campus and will take about two hours. To participate, you must be at least 18 years old and an undergrad at KU. If you’re interested, please fill out the survey, which should take about 10 minutes. Sign-ups accepted until Sept. 12, or until spots are filled. If you have already signed up but have not yet participated, please fill out the survey again with your fall availability.

Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting is a panelist in “Community Conversation: Moments of Truth,” at the National WWI Museum in Kansas City on Sept. 10. She is on a panel with other journalists and media experts who will explore the key moments that shaped today’s media landscape and what comes next for news and information. Register to attend here.

PRSSA Club set for first meeting of semester Sept. 10, at 5:30 p.m. in room 303. We’ll kick things off with introductions, followed by a guest speaker presentation.
Business communicators event set for Sept. 10: Students interested in business communications and connecting with professionals are invited to join the Kansas City chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. KCIABC offers various educational and networking opportunities. Students receive discounts on memberships and are eligible for free tickets to the annual Business Communicators Summit. The KCIABC’s next event is 12-1 p.m., Sept. 10 at Strang Hall, 7313 W. 80th Street, in Overland Park. It focuses on LinkedIn profile optimization. More information can be found here.
The Study Abroad Fair is happening on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union. The fair is a great way to learn about study abroad opportunities and meet with program coordinators.
