Open Institute 2 Conference: A success

The Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (M-ITI) and TIPI hosted the Open Institute V2, "Open in a Time of Closure," in Madeira, Portugal this past December. Five lucky UT Moody College doctoral students were able to attend this conference along with 21 other doctoral students from various Portuguese Universities. We all were able to explore themes with an emphasis on extreme or agonistic approaches to free/open practices. This conference was the follow-up to the original Open Institute in Austin, in 2015.

Dr. Brett Caraway, Professor, University of Toronto – Work and Self Determination

Dr. Jose Colucci: 5 Principles of Human-Centered Design

TIPI sponsored Dr. Jose Colucci, Director of Research for the Design Institute for Health, Dell Medical School, to speak at FCT/UNL, Lisbon and participate in a Digital Media doctoral defense. Colucci talked about his experience using a human-centered approach to design products, services and strategies. His talk highlighted how Design Thinking can bring innovation in many different industries and sectors of society using examples from his portfolio of 17 years at IDEO – one of the best-known design and innovation firms in the world.

Winter Institute 2018

Dr. Djiraj Murthy is TIPI’s hosted keynote speaker for the Digital Media Winter Institute Jan 29-Feb 2, 2018.The iNova Media Lab in Lisbon is hosting this conference which is dedicated to advancing the study of new media, social media methods, and data visualization by promoting the practice of interdisciplinary research through intensive hands-on research methods and work courses. SMART Data Sprint is an intensive hands-on work; driven by social media data that they will use in the week-long Institute. “We adopt inventive and experimental ways of reading, seeing and analyzing platform data, with the aim of responding a set of research questions.

Lígia Duro, from FCT, Nova University of Lisbon will be joining us in Austin as an Exploratory Researcher from January 22-31, 2018. Her thesis entitled: How Aesthetic Pleasure Impacts our Attitudes Related to Physical Activity has, as its aim, to verify if the way motivational messages are presented (their visual presentation, e.g., typefaces, colors) influences individuals attitudes related to engaging in physical exercise, independently of whether they are mainly intrinsically or extrinsically motivated to exercise. She will be meeting with a variety of faculty from the different departments within Moody.

If you are a visiting scholar requiring planning to stay for more than 3 months, please be aware that due to delays in processing of J-1 and other visas, you will now need to submit your paperwork into the TIPI office at least 3 months in advance of your presumed arrival in Austin.
