Message from the President
Greetings friend, and welcome to the March Comfort Connection!
I’m feeling a little nostalgic today as I reflect on the many years Comforts of Home – Care has served the people of Winnipeg and surrounding areas. A broken wrist in 2005 led me to stop in my tracks and decide what direction to take next. We cared for our first client at the start of 2006. We are now established as the largest in-home care company in Winnipeg.
I was contacted last month by a client’s son whom I met in 2008. We provided care and companionship for Suzanna Dong for the past 13 years! She passed away just in January 2021. That is almost the whole span of years the company has been in business! I thought it would be nice to share the email thread we exchanged:
Her son Raz started with, “I want to thank you and your team for the years of service in looking after our mom. Sadly, she passed last month. Your team especially Sheryl helped give her a quality of life the last 13 years and we are forever grateful for that.”
I responded with, “It was indeed a privilege and an honour to work with your mom and dad. I'm so glad Sheryl could be such a consistent help through the years. Thank you for staying with our company all that time! Wow!! I would like to extend deepest sympathies to you and your family. Your parents were terrific and no matter what age, parting is always difficult. Thank the Lord for his promises that this is not the end of our journey. We will meet, see, and hug them again. I wonder what heaven will be like... it is our forever place! Blessings to you and sympathy at the same time.”
And finally, Raz wrote back: “Thank you for your kind and uplifting email. And thank you for founding your company a year before our mom had her life changing stroke. It definitely was timely in hindsight and really gifted our mom with 14 additional years we did not expect her to have at the time. Wishing you and your team success as you continue your mission caring for those in Manitoba that cannot care for themselves.”
It has been such a blessing carrying out this mission of caring for those who cannot care for themselves, giving them a better quality of life. I am truly honoured as I think of all the lives we have touched as a company, both with meaningful employment and the care we provide.
In the fall of 2019, I was approached by the owner of FGC Health. He was very interested in purchasing my company, as many have been over the years. However, I continued to negotiate with Dalbir Bains to completion, unlike the other suitors.
It is with mixed emotions I would like to announce the sale of Comforts of Home – Care to FGC Health being completed March 2021. It has been a privilege and honour to serve my clients all these years. Please be assured nothing will change in so far as service and employment. We have discussed improvements and developments that will be made due to the larger resources of FGC health, however the same personable service will continue to be provided. In fact, I will continue in my role for the next year to assist with the smoothest of transitions.
This may come as a surprise to some. But life is full of change. If we are not moving forward, we are moving backwards. I myself will be moving forward to many new ventures, I’m sure. I am confident I will be leaving the company in very good hands.
