Class of 2027 - Hawk Herald #1 - March 2023
|
NAME,
Welcome to the Hawk Herald newsletter! On behalf of the Orientation and Transition Programs team and all of us at Miami University, congratulations on becoming a member of the Class of 2027!
This is the first of many Hawk Herald newsletters you will receive during your first year at Miami. The Hawk Herald is designed specifically for new Miami students; each edition is packed with information, tips, and resources to support your transition to academic and student life. While the audience for the Hawk Herald is primarily students, family members of new Miami students also receive a copy of each issue of the Hawk Herald.
The first installment of the Hawk Herald includes important details about the required fall semester orientation process for first-year students. I can't wait to meet you when you arrive on-campus for your orientation program this summer!

The Fall Semester Orientation Process |
|
|
Your next step as a confirmed Miami student is to engage in the first-year orientation process. Through orientation, you will build connections, learn about your academic curriculum, set goals and learn about student organizations, and register for fall semester courses.
Fall semester orientation 2023 includes six components, each of which builds on the previous step:
|
- Orientation Canvas course (two parts, before and after on-campus orientation).
- On-campus orientation program (May 24-June 29).
- Transition to college webinar series.
- Miami Bound pre-semester programs (optional).
- Welcome Weekend and First 50 Days.
- First-year experience course.

Register for an On-campus Orientation Program by May 2 |
On-campus orientation sessions are for both you and your parents and family members. View the orientation program dates »
Orientation sessions fill up on a first-come, first-served basis and do not have waiting lists. Please register early and be as flexible as possible with your availability. A common misconception is that students who attend later orientation sessions will have difficulty registering for classes. In reality, seats in common first-year courses are released for each orientation program; students who attend later sessions are not at a disadvantage. You will leave orientation with a full schedule of classes that will help you on your way to timely degree completion.
You must register for an orientation session by May 2, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.

Accessing Your Miami Account |
In order to register for fall semester orientation, you must log in using your UniqueID and password. Your UniqueID can be found in the email you received just after confirming your admission with the subject line Your next steps with Miami. If you've not yet logged in to a Miami University system, your default password is the month and day of your birth and the last four digits of your social security number (SSN). If you did not provide an SSN, use the last four digits of your Banner ID number, located at the bottom of your acceptance letter.
Students (not parents) must enroll in DUO two-factor authentication. You will be prompted to enroll in DUO the first time you sign in to ANY Miami resource after confirming admission. The easiest method for using DUO is a smartphone app (but texts and phone calls are also permissible). For questions about DUO, see the IT Knowledge Base, and/or the IT Services DUO guide.
Should you have trouble logging into your Miami University account, contact IT Services 24 hours a day at MiamiOH.edu/ITchat or 513-529-7900.

Plan Your Orientation Visit |
After you register for orientation, make plans to travel to Oxford for your on-campus orientation program. While not required, you are strongly encouraged to stay close to campus given the length and timing of the orientation program. If you'd like to stay on campus, you may choose to stay in the Marcum Hotel and Conference Center or in a residence hall room.

Reminders for Students Living on Campus |
If you will be living on campus during the fall 2023 semester, be sure to give attention to the following items if you have not already done so.
|
|
|
Complete Your Housing Contract |
| | Select Your Living Learning Communities |
|
|
Miami University has a two-year residency requirement, and it is time to complete your housing contract!
Check out the housing contract tutorial video for a step-by-step guide for completing the housing contract. Within the contract, you will register for fall semester housing and make important selections for on-campus living.
If you've already completed the housing contract, you may view your selections on the contract summary page. If you have questions about living on campus, visit the living on campus frequently asked questions page.
|
|
As a new student, you may choose to request a specific roommate, or to be assigned a roommate based on residential and Living Learning Community interests. You will have the option to search for potential roommates when completing your housing contract. Requests for specific roommates must be submitted and confirmed no later than May 2. The housing team will work to accommodate roommate requests to the best of their ability.
Helpful roommate search tip: Prior to April, there may be a small number of students who have completed a roommate profile, meaning there could be a small number of potential matches. As students complete their housing contracts, there will be more roommate options.
|
| New students are assigned to residence hall rooms and buildings based on their Living Learning Communities (LLC) selections. Instead of selecting a specific building or location to live in on campus, you will indicate your top 3-5 LLC preferences.
Students who are requesting specific roommates must select the same LLC preferences in the same ranked order. If you and your roommate do not have matching LLC preferences, one of you likely will not get the communities you requested. You'll want to talk with each other to be sure you have matching preferences in the same rank order.
