December 2022

As 2022 winds down, I hope each of you takes a moment to reflect on the growth and blessings the last 12 months have brought. In fact, I encourage you to write these reflections into lists and look back on them from time to time.
I’m still crafting my personal highlights but wanted to pass on EA’s Top 10 from 2022.
  1. We celebrated our 60th Anniversary, first with a special publication documenting our six decades of service and later with a culminating event where Joe Ford, son of our visionary founder Dr. Arch Ford, made some special remarks.
  2. We hosted a board retreat at the top of Mount Magazine, where more than thirty board members, staff and education representatives gathered to strategize about expanding our impact.
  3. We finalized a public-private partnership between the Arkansas Securities Department and the Walton Family Foundation to make The Stock Market Game™ student investment simulation available to all students at no cost
  4. We presented the LIFE (Leadership in Free Enterprise) Award to Tommy May and recognized the Arkansas Bankers Association for six decades of support. We look forward to honoring Shelley Simpson with the Excellence in Free Enterprise Award in March 2023.
  5. We expanded our staff by welcoming Lisa Byrum as a new Program Coordinator.
  6. Our REAL Econ for All Conference was back in person for the first time in three years!
  7. We secured Scott Ford, CEO of Westrock Coffee, as our keynote for our upcoming Student Awards Luncheon
  8. We awarded seven teachers with Bessie B. Moore Awards for excellence in teaching economics.
  9. As part of Econ Ed Month, we brought back our student art competition centered on economic principles.
  10. We celebrated 25 years of our Polly M. Jackson Master Economics Teachers program
Our impact is possible because of a statewide team of devoted staff members, a passionate board, generous donors, engaged superintendents, dedicated Center directors, committed Master Economics Teachers, a well-represented group of excited teachers that attend our valuable trainings, and many other program partners along the way. Thank you for making 2022 one to remember.

We look forward to continuing our work in 2023 and many years to come.

Wishing you the happiest of holidays,
Kathleen Lawson

"My classes have participated in The Stock Market Game™ for several years now, and it is the best hands-on teaching tool I have found for my Economics students. They love it and learn so much by researching, calculating and investing! It keeps them engaged, and they can't wait each day to check the markets and chart their company's daily unrealized gains or losses."
