Our Spring 2026 student teachers gathered for their orientation, Jan. 20, where they reviewed classroom etiquette, met their university supervisor, and prepared for a successful semester. We are sending them our best wishes for a great semester in their local classrooms.

Start your month with free coffee, donuts, and connections! Join us on the first Wednesday of each month for an energizing grab-and-go event hosted by the Eriksson College of Education.

Inclusive Leaders

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Feb. 13, Woodward Library 232 or Virtual via Zoom 

This campus-wide workshop series is open to all students, faculty, and staff who wish to develop their leadership skills and learn how to support students in the classroom and beyond. Join us for Amplifying Student Voices, where several undergraduate education majors will speak about their APSU experience. Lunch is provided. In-person and virtual options are available. RSVP required.

Student Tennessee Education Association (STEA) Meeting

4-5 p.m., Feb. 19, Claxton 216

Join the STEA student organization for "Praxis and Pizza," where you will get tips from other education students about how to prepare and pass these essential teacher certification exams. Connect with other education students and learn more about upcoming events! 

TESOL Informational Meeting

5:30-6:30 p.m., Feb. 24, Virtual via Zoom

Interested in teaching English abroad, online, or locally? Join us on Zoom to explore APSU’s TESOL certificate and master’s pathways. We’ll cover program options, timelines, costs, and career outcomes, followed by a live Q&A. 

Dr. Laura Barnett (center) discusses a leadership case study with Master of Arts in Education in educational leadership studies students at Austin Peay State University. This master’s program — now the first federally-registered principal apprenticeship in Tennessee — prepares students to serve as instructional leaders.

The Eriksson College of Education recently launched Tennessee's first Principal Registered Apprenticeship Program (PRAP), a groundbreaking initiative to train the next generation of school leaders through a federally approved "earn while you learn" model.

🎓 Virginia Rosenbalm Gray Future Educator Endowment Established: New scholarship supports full-time education majors with a 3.5+ GPA and demonstrated financial need.

🍎 Eriksson College of Education Hosts Inaugural Aspiring Teachers Day: More than 100 high school students from Teaching as a Profession (TAP) programs attended the event.

📊 Teacher Candidates Achieve Record-High edTPA Scores: The fall semester's graduating seniors earned the Eriksson College of Education's highest edTPA passing rate.

Tennessee Educational Leadership Journal: Manuscripts are now being accepted for the upcoming Spring 2026 issue. Visit the TEL website to view previous issues. Email your submissions to Dr. Joanna Zimmerle to be considered for this issue. Deadline is March 1, 2026.

Observational Model: Starting this spring, we have replaced the edTPA requirement for student teachers and job-embedded teacher candidates. Instead of building a portfolio, you will now receive structured evaluations from your university supervisor throughout your placement. This model is designed to give you clearer expectations, real-time feedback, and actionable strategies you can implement immediately in your classroom.
