SMPA WEEKLY RUNDOWN

SMPA AWARDS CELEBRATION!

This past Monday SMPA gave out over $135,000 in awards, scholarships, and prizes to students. While we were not able to celebrate together in person, SMPA faculty, donors, and staff created a special video and an Adobe Spark page to announce and congratulate the winners.
Monday night students, faculty, and staff gathered via zoom to celebrate and talk about their favorite #SMPAProud moments. Congratulations to all winners. We are all very proud of your success and achievements!

PANDEMIC POLITICS
While America has been frozen in place to fight the Coronavirus, the political earth has continued to spin.
How will COVID-19 affect the Trump reelection? Who will Joe Biden pick for his VP? How has the media handled this pandemic?
As we wrap up finals week, join us this Friday, May 8 at 4 pm ET as our wonderful Terker Fellows Steve Scully, who has interviewed countless candidates on C-SPAN, and Karen Finney, who advised the Hillary Clinton campaign and Stacey Abrams campaign talk to us about the current pandemic and the politics surrounding it. They will also provide insight into how you can make opportunities out of a crisis in the jobs and internship market.
COMMENCEMENT CELEBRATION SAVE THE DATE!
Attention SMPA graduate students and seniors who are graduating this year: save the date for Saturday, May 16, at 10 am ET for our commencement celebration! A special video is being created and will be sent out to all graduates.

For a full list of the virtual commencement schedule, make sure to check out the GW Commencement website.

INTERNSHIPS & JOBS

SMPA is committed to helping you in your search for jobs and internships. We are working each week to make sure you have the most up-to-date information, resources, and support you need to succeed.
SUMMER INTERNSHIP

Did you know that you have the option to take a zero-credit internship course over the summer?  This option is made available through the Center for Career Services. It helps students who want to intern for a company that requires them to be registered for internship credit - but it costs just $35 to register. This makes it possible for students who don't need the internship to count toward their SMPA major to take advantage of the opportunity without having to register for 3 academic credits during the summer.

If you require a letter verifying course enrollment for your internship, you can request it through the application form. For further questions about this course or other internship credit options, you can discuss it with your academic adviser. You can also reach out to the CCAS advising office though the main email: ccasug@gwu.edu.

PLANET FORWARD INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Planet Forward is looking for a student reporter and video production intern starting this summer!
The student reporter will find and report on interesting innovations, characters, and events from GW and other Planet Forward contributing universities, as well as the environmental, science, and journalism communities. The student reporter also may assist with research and writing for various Planet Forward productions and events, and the production of the editorial side of our website. All work will be posted on PlanetForward.org.
The video production intern will be involved in producing original video content for PlanetForward.org. This is essentially a field reporter position requiring knowledge and an awareness of on-campus and nearby events.
Applications are due May 15!
ALUMNI VIRTUAL NETWORKING HOUR: INDUSTRY NETWORKS
On Wednesday, May 6 (4:30-5:30 pm ET) connect with fellow GW and SMPA alumni all over the world to share your experiences, exchange career tips, and build your professional network! It’s free, it’s only an hour, and it’s fun!

JUNIORS: PLAN EARLY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SPECIAL HONORS IN POLITICAL COMMUNICATION!
To declare for special honors in PCM, students must have at least an overall 3.7 GPA at GW and in courses for the major. They may declare for Special Honors at the beginning of their senior year. Students take SMPA 4199 Senior Seminar in the first semester of the senior year and SMPA 4198 Special Honors Research Seminar in the second semester. To achieve Special Honors, the student must maintain the required GPA and present a successful oral defense of a research paper prepared for the Honors Research Seminar before a committee that includes the seminar instructor and two other faculty members nominated by the student in consultation with the seminar instructor.
GW COLONIAL HEALTH CENTER
It is imperative to remember that your physical and mental health is important. Remember to take walks, exercise, start a new project, connect with friends and family on Facetime or Zoom.
GW Colonial Health Center is available should you need it at 202-994-8951 or by email at students@gwu.edu
Along with the Colonial Health Center, SMPA is here if you need anything. Please feel free to contact Jen Halpin at jhalpin@email.gwu.edu.
VOTER REGISTRATION
Many students will need to register for the first time this year or will need to re-register because they have moved since they last registered - promoting online voter registration via email makes it easy for students to register to vote. In light of the ongoing crises and the shift to online learning, Studentvote.org is placing added emphasis on online voter registration to ensure that all students can have their voices heard in this primary season and November beyond it.
MEDIA FILE IS LOOKING FOR WRITERS & A BUSINESS DIRECTOR!

MediaFile, an independent student-run publication tracking media news, is looking for staff reporters, multimedia producers, and more! Now in its fourth year, MediaFile is also looking for a business director, who will oversee current fundraising efforts and will be responsible for developing a business plan for the year that includes advertising and marketing strategies, as well as working creatively to think of new ways to bring in resources that will help expand MediaFile's reporting and multimedia projects.
To apply, fill out the corresponding forms below. Please reach out to MediaFile's Editor-in-Chief, Celine Castronuovo, at castronuovo@mediafiledc.com if you have any questions.

STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Almaz Abedje, a graduating senior in The School of Media and Public Affairs, recently finished a project for her internship at CBS where all interns were asked to write an article and produce a short video on an aspect of their lives that's been impacted by COVID-19. Since she was fasting at the time, she wanted to explore the ways that Ethiopian Orthodox Tewhedo Christians were adapting to the ways that they worship away from the church, during the longest fast of the Coptic calendar year.

FACULTY IN THE SPOTLIGHT

LISA PALMER will give the commencement address to the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science on May 29. UMCES will have a virtual commencement for the graduate students and Ph.D. program. The focus of her talk is the value of science communication.
Cheryl W. Thompson guest taught (virtually) a Freshman seminar journalism class at Princeton University on Wednesday.
Silvio Waisbord co-authored an op-ed on the upsurge in global news consumption during the pandemic for Argentina's La Nacion.

GW'S RESPONSE TO COVID-19
The health and safety of the GW community is a top priority for the University. The School of Media and Public Affairs encourages all students, parents, faculty, and staff to please read and follow the updates coming out of the George Washington University.
