Morgan Freeman Attacked by Russia, CHC Chair Pushes Legalizing Weed, and Obama Swipes at White House
Subscribe
Okay so we’re a little tardy. Our apologies. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference kicked off with a bit of a bang last night, and maybe somebody overslept this morning. But we can neither confirm nor deny these vicious rumors. Now let’s get to it. Hurricane Maria is now a Category Three and after laying waste to Puerto Rico (more on that below), the storm is headed towards the Dominican Republic. Back at the UN General Assembly, Melania Trump gave her first UN speech and used the opportunity to condemn bullying and remarkably managed to do so with a straight face. Researchers? Find her statement defending the president’s attacks on MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, please. Control room? Cue the complicity tape of her perpetuating the Barack Obama birther lie, please. Meanwhile, more of that good brain from hubby who mistakenly referred to Namibia, a country in southern Africa, as "Nambia" while meeting with African leaders. On Capitol Hill, Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) got a compliment from 45, who called their legislation to repeal the ACA a “great bill.” Don’t get too excited guys. This president has been known to change his mind a time or two. It’s a beautiful sunny day in the nation’s capital. If you’re visiting from out of town, welcome! We’re kicking off Thursday with this:
  • Barack Obama swipes at the GOP.
  • Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) urge Trump to help Puerto Rico.
  • Congressional Black Caucus launches new website.
  • Senator Elizabeth Warren's (D-MA) campaign wants you to join them. Check out the job posting below!
  • CA AG Xavier Becerra sues admin over border wall.
  • Preet Bharara and Joshua DuBois join CNN.
  • Russian diplomats come for Morgan Freeman.
  • What happened at the WH HBCUs Summit? Find out below.
  • HBCU voter turnout plummeted in 2016
  • We’ve got a pic of Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) like you’ve never seen before -- it’s #TBT y’all.
  • Podesta Group has a new Principal.
  • Samantha Bee wants to know WTF Omarosa’s job actually is.
  • A look at what happened to Indian Country Today.
  • Study finds uninsured rate for Asian Americans drops.

Obama Swipes at Current Administration
Former President Barack Obama spoke at an event sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation yesterday. The remarks coincided with Donald Trump's first trip to the UN General Assembly. "It may be frustrating that we have to mobilize every couple months to keep our leaders from inflicting real human suffering on their constituents," Obama said of the healthcare battle. "But typically, that's how progress is won ... When I see people trying to undo that hard-won progress, for the 50th or 60th time, with bills that will raise costs, reduce coverage and roll back protections for older Americans and people with pre-existing conditions ... it is aggravating." And he decried a decision by the Trump administration to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, saying the move was misguided. "Even if the federal government is not as engaged on these efforts as I would like," the world is still making progress on climate change, Obama said. Click the image to play the full remarks. Or read the speech here.
Rubio, Gutiérrez Urge Trump to Aid Puerto Rico
Both Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) wrote to Donald Trump urging the administration to provide immediate aid and relief to Puerto Rico as it begins to assess the damage from Hurricane Maria, a Category Four hurricane that made landfall yesterday. Rubio and fellow Florida Senator Ben Nelson (D) wrote to both Trump and AG Jeff Sessions. “It is important that the federal government stands ready to assist in the difficult days after Hurricane Maria passes, when hope must be available to combat despair. ... we urge your administration’s continued attention to this dangerous storm so that appropriate federal resources can quickly be made available as locally unmet needs arise,” reads their letter to Trump. “We respectfully urge you to expand the scope of the task force in Puerto Rico to account for any illegal activity related to Hurricane Maria,” the Senators asked of Sessions. Gutiérrez asked Trump to “declare a major disaster in Puerto Rico as soon as the statute allows and direct FEMA to aggressively marshal and coordinate all federal resources available to the Island as quickly as humanly possible.” Trump did so early this morning. See the Rubio/Nelson letters here and the Gutiérrez letter here.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, a champion for working families, is looking for a Deputy Research Director to join her 2018 re-election campaign. The Deputy Research Director will work with the Research Director to take on in-depth research projects focusing on primary source and public records material for Senator Warren’s Senate re-elect.
CHC Chair Moves to Legalize Weed in New Mexico
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair and NM gubernatorial candidate Congresswoman Michelle Luján Grisham (D-NM) says she is committed to working with the New Mexico state legislature to move toward legalizing recreational cannabis in a way that “improves public safety, boosts state revenues, and allows for New Mexico businesses to grow into this new market.” In order to accomplish that, Luján Grisham said, “we need to conduct a thorough analysis of recreational cannabis programs in other states, which will help us craft appropriate laws to keep our children safe and to implement effective [driving while intoxicated] enforcement.” See Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and DC. Luján Grisham is considered the frontrunner in the gubernatorial race, having outraised the competition, and picking up some meaningful endorsements.

CBC Launches New Website
Yesterday, the Congressional Black Caucus launched a new website intended to serve as a more comprehensive portal where visitors can learn more about the latest CBC actions and announcements. Their website now contains an interactive engagement center that contains information on all of the CBC’s advocacy campaigns, as well as a detailed issues section that contains information about all of their task forces and working groups. “Today we launched a new website that reflects the power & purpose of our bipartisan, bicameral 49-member caucus,” they said on Twitter. Check it out.
Black Employees Sue Trump International for Racial Discrimination
Three former and current employees of BLT Prime, located inside the Trump International Hotel, are suing the Trump Organization, BLT, and the third-party management company ESquared Hospitality, for racial discrimination. On Wednesday, Irving Smith Jr., a current employee, joined by Dominique Hill and JaNette Sturdivant, former employees, filed a civil complaint in D.C. Superior Court alleging that the Trump Organization and hotel Managing Director Mickael Damelincourt had BLT Prime and ESquared Hospitality put Black employees on less lucrative shifts and subjected them to discriminatory behavior by staff and guests. Harvard Announces 2017 W.E.B. Du Bois Honorees
Democratic strategist Donna Brazile, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, Ford Foundation President Darren Walker, and educator and activist Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer are among those who will receive Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Medal. The celebration will take place on October 4th during an annual ceremony at Harvard’s Hutchins Center for African & African American Research. The Du Bois Medal honors individuals who have made significant contributions to African and African American history and culture. “These eight new recipients of the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal look to the future as they celebrate the past,” said Harvard Professor and Hutchins Center Director Henry Louis Gates Jr. “They bring their genius and their abiding sense of social responsibility to the arts, public service, the corporate realm, and philanthropy. To tie their names to the great Du Bois honors all, and advances the Hutchins Center’s mission to educate, to interrogate, and to inspire.” Rap icon LL Cool J, filmmaker Ava DuVernay, Microsoft Chairman John W. Thompson, and artist Kara Walker will also be honored. Get more here from the Boston Globe.

Obama Alumnus Joins CNN
CNN hired Barack Obama’s Executive Director of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships as a Contributor. Joshua DuBois, who now runs Values Partnerships, is no stranger to the network having made numerous appearances since his WH departure. The Princeton graduate was recently the subject of much discussion after a heated exchange with Trump supporter Paris Dennard over the Charlottesville violence. DuBois stated that the President brought white nationalists into the White House citing the now departed Sebastian Gorka, Steve Bannon, and Steve Miller -- who, as of this morning, still has a slot in the West Wing. Dennard angrily retorted that Josh was offensive saying, “you will not be on this network and call these people white supremacists.” It was a scene.  Josh is also the bestselling author of The President's Devotional and writes for The Daily Beast. He is expected to focus on race, religion, and politics for CNN. Fun fact: this member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is also expecting his first daughter -- who will join big brother August -- with wife, Michelle. Congrats on both, Josh. More about him here.
Preet Bharara Joins CNN
Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who was fired by the Trump administration in March, has also been hired by CNN. He will join the team as a Senior Legal Analyst. Bharara has made guest appearances on a number of TV shows, and his new gig means he should be a frequent presence on the network -- particularly as they cover investigations into the Trump administration. Politico reports that Bharara was known for his media savvy on the job in Manhattan, and since leaving office in March has amassed nearly 440,000 Twitter followers. He also recently launched a podcast, Stay Tuned With Preet. Bharara is also a distinguished scholar in residence at the NYU’s School of Law and an EVP at Some Spider Studios, his brother’s media company. His expanded media presence is fueling even more speculation that he’s planning to run for office. More here.
First Look Media Nabs Shaun King and Aída Chávez
Former NY Daily News Reporter Shaun King has joined First Look Media. The Morehouse College graduate was most recently writer-in-residence at Harvard Law School's Fair Justice Project. They also plucked The Hill’s Aída Chávez who joins the team as a reporter. The Arizona State University graduate will be based in DC. Launched by eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar in October 2013, First Look Media bills itself as a venue for "original, independent journalism. The outlet’s website says it "is built on the belief that freedom of expression and of the press, and fiercely independent perspectives, are vital to a healthy democracy and a vibrant culture.” More about them here.
González Joins Podesta
The Podesta Group has hired Ariel González as a Principal. Most recently, Ariel served as Chief of Government Relations for the American Psychiatric Association (APA), overseeing federal and state legislative affairs, regulatory policy, as well as political engagement and representing member organizations on healthcare, mental health, substance abuse, and programs influencing psychiatry. González also works as a pro bono attorney for domestic violence victims and has served as a legal counsel for the elderly through AARP. The James Madison University graduate went on to earn his MA from George Washington University before finishing law school at Catholic University. More about him here.

Russian Diplomats Come for Morgan Freeman
Actor Morgan Freeman appeared in a video for the Committee to Investigate Russia that appeared on YouTube on Tuesday. Freeman states that 'we are at war' with Russia over its alleged interference in the 2016 US election and also discusses how Russian President Vladimir Putin is allegedly after 'revenge' against the United States. This prompted Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova to write in a Facebook post that “Morgan Freeman has been roped in, just like Colin Powell.” Zakharova goes on to discuss the 2003 incident in which then-Secretary of State Colin Powell presented a tube filled with white powder to the UN Security Council amid the United States push to invade Iraq. She wrote, “We will know who is behind this story sooner than we knew about the true contents of the infamous test tube.” The government-controlled TASS Russian News Agency headline further alleged that Freeman has been 'weaponized' against Russia. The Fall of Indian Country Today
As The Beat DC reported earlier this month, Indian Country Today (ICT), a weekly online information entity, announced it was suspending operations after 36 years in business. “As the former editor of Akwesasne Notes (1986-1992) I have strong opinions as to why ICT failed,” wrote Doug George-Kanentiio in Indianz.com. “Primarily it was the contrast between a community based news publication such as Akwesasne Notes and one which had its offices (sic) Manhattan with a manager who was once employed by Playboy.” He goes on to write, “The problems with ICT can be traced to its decision by the first editors and managers to leave Lakota territory where it had community support and move to offices in central New York and then to an urban environment far removed from the people it was designed to serve. There was no connection between the Oneida people and ICT -- it lacked presence and was largely irrelevant to their lives.” More here.
Samantha Bee Asks WTF is Omarosa’s Job
On Wednesday’s broadcast of Full Frontal, comedian Samantha Bee devoted a segment to Omarosa asking “WTF her job is.” The show aired amid reports that WH Chief of Staff John Kelly was trying to push out the Communications Director for the Office of Public Liaison. “Omarosa’s brief is something about Black outreach, which is odd because she may be the only person who turns Black people off more than Trump does,” said Bee. “Literally, nobody knows what Omarosa does in the White House, other than piss people off.” Watch the segment here.

HBCU Voter Turnout Plummeted in 2016
According to a new report from Tufts University, voter turnout among college students grew by 3.2 percentage points during the 2016 elections. Turnout was up among white, Hispanic and Asian American students, but down among Black students. The report goes on to reveal that turnout plummeted by more than 10 points at HBCUs from 50.5 to 39.9%. At women's colleges, it grew by 7.3 percentage points, more than twice the national rate. Around 48% of voting-age college students voted in 2016. The students studied were overwhelmingly young with nearly two-thirds coming in under the age of 25 and 85% were undergraduates. More here.
A Recap of the WH Summit on HBCUs
Remember when Omarosa and WH Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the annual WH HBCU conference was sold out? Well, they downgraded the conference to a summit and of the 107 HBCUs across the country, only 29 showed up. One unexpected attendee was former Executive Director of the WH Initiative on HBCUs' Dr. Ivory Toldson. He told The Beat DC he was grateful for his former staff who put public service first and politics aside. “They represent the steady heartbeat of the WH Institution on HBCUs that endures, even when they face temporarily changes.” When asked about his successor, Dr. Toldson offered this: “HBCUs can continue to experience increases in revenue from the federal government if the Executive Director aggressively enforces the Executive Order and creates innovative ways to connect HBCUs to funding opportunities.” According to the United Negro College Fund, HBCUs enroll about 300,000 students nationwide. They graduate 20% of all African Americans who attend college, they produce 70% of all Black doctors and dentists and 50% of Black engineers and public school teachers. More here.

Becerra Sues Trump Over Border Wall
California is suing to block Donald Trump's plan to construct a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra filed the lawsuit in a federal court in San Diego, arguing that the wall violates federal law and the Constitution by intruding on state’s rights. "They're violating the Tenth Amendment and infringing on a lot of state laws, not just federal laws, that affect our state. At the same time, they're trying to do something that only Congress can do," Becerra said. This is the latest in a series of suits he has filed against the administration. More here.
U.S. and Cuba Commission Meet for First Time Since January
For the first time since Trump took office, the U.S. and Cuba held their Bilateral Commission meeting in DC and it wasn’t exactly a cordial tête-à-tête. The Cuban delegation, led by Cuban Chief Negotiator Josefina Vidal, noted that the meeting was being held while there is a “reversal” in Cuba-U.S. relations. Earlier this summer, Trump announced a new policy that makes it more difficult for Americans to travel to the island and limits U.S. commercial dealings with Cuba. In a statement, the Cuban delegation said that it “placed on record its rejection of measures designed to intensify the U.S. blockade [its term for the embargo] and to interfere with Cuban internal affairs.” The Cubans also said Trump made “disrespectful, unacceptable and meddling statements” in his address to the U.N. General Assembly. Cuba added that it has a “keen interest” in solving the series of “health incidents” that have afflicted a number of U.S. diplomats assigned to Havana, saying “Cuba has never perpetrated nor will it ever perpetrate actions of this nature, and has never permitted nor will it ever permit any third-party use of its territory for this purpose.” The commission was set up during the Obama administration and had previously met five times since the U.S. and Cuba re-established diplomatic relations in 2015. More here from the Miami Herald.

Chen Says Graham-Cassidy is GOP’s Last Chance to Overturn ACA
Conservative political commentator and Hoover Institute Fellow Lanhee Chen weighed in on the Obamacare repeal efforts saying the GOP has one last chance to overturn the law. Writing for the WSJ, Chen writes that after seven years of promising to repeal the Affordable Care Act and failing to do so earlier this year, the Graham-Cassidy bill is their last chance. “Graham-Cassidy is not a perfect proposal. But Republicans no longer have the luxury of waiting for something better. The bill before them is the most thoughtful and, yes, conservative health-reform plan they have encountered in their yearslong effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare,” he writes. The piece does not mention the exploding premiums that people with certain pre-existing conditions face under this bill or lifetime medical spending caps. Read the op-ed here.
Uninsured Rate Drops for Asian Americans
The uninsured rate for Asian Americans dropped by one percentage point between 2015 and 2016 while it remained unchanged for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, according to data released last week from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Last year, 6.8% of people who said they were of Asian descent alone did not have health insurance compared to 7.8% in 2015, the data showed. For people who said they were of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islander descent alone, the rate held steady those two years, at 9.9%. Kathy Ko Chin, President and CEO of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), credits the ACA. “We are thrilled to see the continued success of the Affordable Care Act, and the efforts of those who’ve engaged in outreach and enrollment work, reflected in the record low uninsured rate for Asian Americans and the continuing low rate for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.” However, despite these drops, some groups still faced double-digit uninsured rates last year. Among them were Bangladeshis (12.2%), Pakistanis (11%), Thais (11%), and Laotians (10%). More here from NBC Asian America.
