Usually, we highlight students or faculty in the newsletter but we were fortunate to meet up with the 2019 Valedictorian and Neuroscience and Behavior Major Dr. Sofia Carozza. This South Bend native who is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University Medical School was invited to speak on “What is the Brain” at the McGrath Institute and College of Science Organs and Origins Conference Series on April 5th and 6th.
Sofia reflected on her time here at the University of Notre Dame recalling she was in one of the first classes to graduate as a declared neuroscience major. She explained that it was through Dr. Nancy Michael’s mentorship that she fell in love with the neuroscience program. “I took a lot of courses across disciplines, trying to arrive at a more robust and comprehensive picture of what it means to be a person and to live a good life,” she said. Sofia majored in both neuroscience and theology because of her desire to understand all of reality. She explains that although Notre Dame prepares students to have successful careers, the point of being here is “to behold the truth of creation and to try to advance our knowledge of it. And that's an immense privilege that can set the foundation for a very rewarding intellectual, professional, and spiritual life for the rest of your adulthood.”
Sofia received a Marshall Scholarship to earn her masters and doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. Afterward, she returned to the states, specifically Boston, for a postdoctoral position at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. There, she works in a neurology lab that examines the relationship between social bonds and brain health. “As a neuroscientist, your object of study is the human person. And so, in a sense, there's not a single question that's off limits,” she said. While her research focus is developmental neuroscience, she is also undertaking interdisciplinary projects on aphasia and the philosophy of science. Much like her mentor, Dr. Michael, you can simply hear the joy and wonder in her voice as she speaks about the work she’s doing now.
She left some parting advice to current students “to seek that which they find most meaningful and beautiful instead of necessarily following the expectations that they (or others) might have of what an undergraduate experience should be.” As an interdisciplinary student pursuing two majors, she mapped out a plan that enabled her to take courses with professors she esteemed and engage in projects outside the classroom. She continued, “once you have discovered your passion, I’d think seriously about who it is that you want to learn from, and how you can best steward your time so that by the end of your time at Notre Dame, you've taken advantage of the incredible opportunities that are on campus.”

PT/FT Employment Gig Shifts |
FT/PT & PRN shifts Information Here
This unique opportunity includes FT/PT (for graduating seniors potentially) and PRN shifts available. Beacon has purposefully created what they call "GIG shift PRN, which means these PRN folks can pickup any type of shift they want, kind of when they want. For example they can pickup hours in as small or large chunks is they want ( 4,6,8,12 hour shifts). They are not locked into a set schedule, but instead can look for open shifts and pickup when they want to work (think Doordash for mental health techs) The only strict hours are during their orientation period which is much more difficult to move around. "To apply, scan the QR code on the flier attached to "Information Here."

Summer Research Assistants |
Open until filled Summer Research jrobicha@nd.edu
The Mosquito Vector Surveillance Project in the Department of Biological Sciences at Notre Dame is recruiting 1-2 undergraduate students to accompany lab members for fieldwork during summer 2024 and beyond. Undergraduate research assistants will join a team working in collaboration with St. Joseph County Department of Health to collect and identify mosquitoes of medical importance (vectors that carry West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis). The collection season begins in early June and extends to mid-October (depending on weather conditions). Beyond the collection season, undergraduate research assistants have an opportunity to learn other skills in computing using historic and collected data. More information about the project can be found here.
Job Description & Responsibilities: Alongside lab members, undergraduate research assistants will help with driving to locations, field experiment setup, collections, mosquito identifications and counts, and data entry and management. Physical labor with field work involves hiking (~1 mile) through the local parks carrying supplies (up to 10 -15 pounds) 3 days a week (depending on weather). Laboratory work will involve time at the microscope sorting, identifying, and counting mosquitoes for abundance data. Research assistants are expected to work independently and in small teams. No previous experience is necessary – but if you have a particular interest in public health or entomology, fantastic. Preference given to rising sophomores/juniors who would be willing to stay on the project for additional years!
Dates: For summer collections, the position will start in late May/early June and continue until mid August (before the semester starts). However, the full collection season continues until October and, if you are able, research credit will be available to continue through fall semester to complete the season.
Contact: If interested, please email Jennifer Robichaud (jrobicha@nd.edu) with a CV/resume and a brief (~1 paragraph) description of why you are interested in the position and what you hope to get out of the experience.
Deadline: All applications received by March 4th will be given full consideration, but the position will remain open until filled. Selected applicants interested in conducting independent research will also be encouraged to apply for a COS-SURF grant by March 10th with the assistance of Prof. Robichaud or Michelle Huang.
