Hello, Fellow Dog Lovers!
Hope you're all enjoying the dog days of summer! June has been an incredibly exciting month for me, as I took part in two fantastic conferences. The first was my second annual UK Dog Bite Prevention and Behaviour Conference, which sold out and was a great weekend. I then spoke at the IMPACT Conference, which focused on humane training for working dogs. I was honored to be a part of both of these amazing events.
As the 4th of July is coming up in the US, you'll find some training tips from me on fireworks phobia scattered throughout this month's newsletter. And make sure you check out the great deal we've got going on in the Positively store just in time for those troublesome fireworks.
As always, you'll find exclusive content and training tips that you won't find anywhere else. Hope you enjoy!

Fireworks Anxiety
Victoria's tips on working with a dog with fireworks anxiety.
Working with dogs that have a fear or phobia can be complex because even though some common fears can be successfully worked with, others are deeply ingrained and are therefore highly resistant to change.
Recent reports have shown that 93% of dogs with noise phobias involved fear of thunder and other loud noises, including fireworks. Whether fear of fireworks is elicited by a singular traumatic experience or prolonged exposure, the result is often highly distressing for dogs and owners.  Without extensive behavioural therapy and management strategies, phobias become deeply ingrained and even harder to change...

TOP TIP
The sight and sound of fireworks can be terrifying for dogs. More dogs are lost on the 4th of July than at any other time in the US, so make sure you keep your dog safely indoors on the 4th, as well as the days before and after the holiday, as neighors may shoot off fireworks unexpectedly.
If your dog comes to you for comfort during fireworks, give it to him. Some people think that if you comfort a nervous or fearful dog you will reinforce his fear, but the opposite is actually true. A calming touch or just holding your dog close will make him feel safe.
