Dear Student or Alumnus/Alumna,
We are required to use your legal name for this communication. The Tax Relief Act of 1997 and IRS regulation 1.6050S-1 requires that universities provide 1098T forms to students enrolled each calendar year. This form will help you or your parents determine if you are eligible for a tax credit.
Our records indicate that you may have reportable transactions for this year’s 1098-T tax filing. Tufts does not have your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) on your student record. As a US citizen or permanent resident, Tufts is required to file a 1098T form for you and report to the IRS regardless of whether we have your SSN/ITIN (if you have reportable transactions). Tufts University and the individual tax payer can be fined by the IRS for 1098T’s filed without a SSN/ITIN. Tufts has been assessed a penalty for missing SSNs in prior years.
We strongly recommend that you provide your SSN/ITIN by December 31, 2022 in order to have the correct information for this IRS reporting.
International students may need a 1098T, depending on tax status. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SSN/ITIN AND DO NOT INTEND TO FILE A U.S. TAX RETURN, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.
Please read the instructions below carefully. If you submit your information after December 31, 2022 you will have to contact us to ensure the production of your form contains the updated SSN/ITIN. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL YOUR SSN/ITIN. EMAILED FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Enrolled students providing an SNN or ITIN can update their information via SIS. instructions on how to enter your SSN in SIS are attached.
Alumni and students not currently enrolled that attended Boston and Grafton – Health Sciences programs should contact their Registrar’s Office directly to discuss alternative methods of updating your SSN/ITIN as they will not be able to update their records in SIS.
Alumni and students not currently enrolled that attended the Medford and SMFA Campus that includes Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Fletcher undergraduate and graduate programs should print, mail or fax a W-9 form to the address below:
