Mongan Reflections from the Director:
| |
Reflections: Dr. Katrina Armstrong and the Mongan InstituteIt is with both sadness and deep gratitude that this month’s Reflections recognizes Dr. Katrina Armstrong as she will be assuming a new position in the spring, as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine and Chief Executive Officer of Columbia University Irving Medical Center. As the Chair of Medicine and as Physician in Chief at Massachusetts General Hospital, Doctor Armstrong's impact on the Department, on MGH, and on the field of academic medicine in the United States has been profound. There will be many well warranted accolades over the coming months, yet there are few initiatives at MGH that owe their development to Dr. Armstrong more than the Mongan Institute. Two years after arriving at MGH in 2013, Dr. Armstrong commissioned a blue-ribbon panel to consider a new vision for health services research. The overarching assessment of the external committee of experts was the following: “There is enormous opportunity in health care and population science research and enormous opportunity for MGH to lead in those areas”. (Ash D, Blumenthal D, Bradley E, Tarbell N, 2015) It is this vision that compelled me to come to join the Department of Medicine in the fall of 2018. Three years later, it remains my distinct honor, privilege, and joy to be the inaugural James J. and Jean H. Mongan Professor of Medicine and Mongan’s Director. Dr. Armstrong’s support for our development has been unwavering, and yet, she has also fully delivered on her pledge that the vision of the institute would be that of the director and that the department chair’s role was to help facilitate that vision. Over the weekend before her announcement, and in a subsequent meeting at Dr. Armstrong’s office, we had an opportunity to reflect on the past few years. It is astonishing to consider our growth from seven initial centers/programs to thirteen, and from approximately 75 faculty to 130 who annually publish over 2000 research articles. In particular, we discussed how the extraordinary directors, faculty, and staff of the Mongan Institute have had a major impact reformulating “translational research” at MGH “from bench to beside to community and population ( https://www.massgeneral.org/research). In recognition of the growth and impact of population and delivery research, Mongan and our field was featured at this year’s MGH Scientific Advisory Committee annual meeting focusing on high impact research on COVID-19 ( https://ecor.mgh.harvard.edu/MeetingsEvents/SAC/SAC2021). Looking forward, planning for the next phase of Mongan’s development includes: continuing to prioritize recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority faculty in conjunction with advancing equity-focused research; further enhancing mentoring and support of our junior faculty as the future of our field; establishing a population and health care delivery research collaborative across MGH’s departments; and an exciting initiative in research training programs in health care delivery science, beginning with a 2-day national conference in the coming year. In closing, as we anticipate with sadness Dr. Armstrong’s transition, I could not be more excited by our future—and look forward to detailing initiatives that we will be pursing in the coming months. Finally, as we continue to personally and professionally strive to manage the continued impact of the global pandemic—including the tragic loss of life and illness that is touching all of our families, friends, colleagues, and fellow citizens—my sincere hope is that the holiday season will bring all of us much needed respite and fellowship with loved ones. Sincere best wishes for health and happiness in the upcoming holiday season! - Steve Bartels, MD, MS
