At Canopy Center we serve some of the most vulnerable members of our community. While the work that we do can be heavy - we are so grateful that this community has also brought us you! The volunteers. The donors. The supporters. This month we had the opportunity to engage with our community in new and inspiring ways.

Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah Gray |

At Canopy Center, we have an exceptional volunteer role that often flies under the radar. Our Client Services & Childcare Volunteers serve as our front-line ambassadors, positioned at the front desk to greet clients as they arrive. They are the first warm and welcoming face you encounter when you walk through our doors. We rely on them to set the tone and make sure every visitor feels welcomed and cared for. These volunteers not only offer refreshments and answer questions, they keep the lobby neat and peaceful for our clients. They also step in to provide childcare for the children being served by our Oasis program and their siblings, whenever the need arises.
You might wonder, why is childcare necessary for Oasis clients and their siblings?

Our therapists are engaged in sessions with children and there are times when they need to have private conversations with the child’s caregiver. This is where our childcare volunteers come in. They look after the child so the adults can have private, focused conversations. We’re all about eliminating barriers that might prevent our clients from receiving the support they need. So, if siblings need to tag along, we ensure they are well taken care of, too.
At Stand Up & Sing for Kids, we recognized one of these incredible volunteers: Hannah Gray. Hannah has been a steady presence for our families as a Client Services & Childcare Volunteer for over a year now. Almost every Tuesday afternoon, she’s at Canopy Center, bringing her calm, collected demeanor to what can sometimes be a chaotic environment. We’ve seen her handle some rather tumultuous situations with remarkable grace!
Recently, Tuesdays from 4 to 5pm have been particularly hectic, with up to seven children in the childcare mix! Hannah takes it all in stride - leading children in games like, “The Floor is Lava” and building epic toy race tracks. Even when it’s just a couple of energetic boys, Hannah is right there, earning their trust and respect. They are so fond of her that if she has to be away for a week, they immediately ask where she is.
Hannah is not just a volunteer; she is an indispensable part of the services we provide. Thank you, Hannah!

Evjue Supports Accessibility |

We are thrilled to announce that Canopy Center has been awarded a grant from the Evjue Foundation! This funding is instrumental in breaking down barriers to access for our Oasis Sexual Abuse Treatment Program, ensuring that more children and families in our community can benefit from our vital services.
With the Evjue Foundation’s support, we will be able to provide translated documents and interpretation services for English language learners, allowing us to effectively serve more children and families. Additionally, we will offer transportation assistance through cabs and gas cards to families in need, ensuring that lack of transportation does not prevent children from attending their weekly therapy sessions.
Language and transportation are two significant obstacles that many of the families in our community face, when seeking help. By April, we had exceeded our translation and interpretation budget for the year - serving a higher than anticipated Latinx population. These services are also not fully funded by the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) or our contract with Dane County Department of Human Services.
The Oasis program is dedicated to supporting the healthy functioning of children and families affected by child sexual abuse. Our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed practices to help children and non-offending parents and caregivers develop essential coping skills. Regular assessments demonstrate that children in our program show marked improvements in mental health and a reduction in trauma symptoms.
We are deeply grateful to the Evjue Foundation for their commitment to improving accessibility and supporting healing in our community.
