2019 MGH Stand Against Racism: Simkins v. Cone Hospital, a Legacy of Hospital Discrimination, and the Impact of a Public Apology
| |
| Monday, December 2
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
O'Keeffe Auditorium
Massachusetts General Hospital
Stand Against Racism is a nationwide YWCA movement that brings people together from all walks of life to raise awareness and empower action towards eliminating racism. Join us on Monday, December 2, to pay tribute to The 1619 Project. The 1619 Project is a major initiative from The New York Times observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of Black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.
For this event we have invited Dr. Alvin Powell, the Chief Health Equity Officer of Cone Health in Greensboro, NC. On November 1, 2016, to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of the 1963 landmark Simkins v. Cone Hospital lawsuit that desegregated hospitals, a local medical society placed a historical marker beside Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital. Fortuitously, about 6 weeks before the marker ceremony, Cone Hospital's CEO apologized to the community and the sole living plaintiff, Dr. Alvin Blount, 94, for the hospital's past role in perpetuating discriminatory practices in healthcare. Dr. Blount died about 4 months after the apology.
Dr. Powell is a native of Boston, and he received his undergraduate education at Columbia University, received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, completed his residency training in internal medicine at Duke University, and completed a fellowship in nephrology at Emory University. He has been a nephrologist in private practice in Greensboro for 29 years and was the former President of medical staff at Cone Hospital. He was previously employed by the National Health Service Corps at a community health center in Florida and has been a volunteer in medical missions in Haiti and Honduras. As a child, he received his medical care at Boston City Hospital and Dimock Community Health Center.
