SGA Celebrates Homecoming
The Senior Golfers first held its summer event in the majestic North Carolina mountains in 1976. This year the event was in the "Height of Happiness" town of Highlands. The event began with a delicious dinner the Cullasaja Club, hosted by longtime SGA members and Highlands residents Millie and Tom Coleman. The lovely new open-air dining room overlooked the dramatic mountain course, and participants felt they were part of the beautiful natural environment. SGA newcomers Pam and Wayne Dadetto were introduced, and details were given out for the week's events.
After the three days of golf, Chapel Hill's Gus Neville was winner for the men at Highalds. "Nancy and I have had a wonderful time here, but now, I must inform everyone I will be moving on to join the LIV tour," quipped Gus jokingly, as much buzz during the week centered around the controversial news in golf. However, there was big news in SGA also, as Diane Bruner surprised her husband Jim not only by emerging as winner for the ladies, but also by re-leading him down the aisle at the delightful On the Verandah and going through special vows pronounced by preacher-for-a-day Ken Young to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.  For readers who wish to see just how stately and dignified the ceremony was, a video is attached below. Be sure to notice the Maid of Honor's Elvis headdress, a very nice touch.
Gross Runners-up were Jane & Jim Harrenga. Low Net winners were Wayne Dadetto and Sarah Young. Runners-up were Chuck Masek, Tom Coleman and Ken Young. Winning Best Ball team was Diane & Jim Bruner, and Ken & Sarah Young.  Close to pin winners were Gus Neville and Sarah Young. Putting winners were Nancy Atkinson and Gus Neville.
The Senior Golfers will return to the North Carolina mountains in the fall at Jefferson Landing in West Jefferson, September 5-9. Plan to be there!

The Bascom - A Center for the Visual Arts

SGA Members enjoyed exploring the charming Highlands area. The picturesque Main Street, cute shopping areas, very good restaurants all are popular with visitors and residents alike. Guided and informed by longtime SGA Highlands resident and author Millie Coleman,  SGA FoGs (Friends of Golfers) and golf participants visited Dry Falls, (location of the filming of the classic Last of the Mohicans), Bridal Veil Falls, the High Hampton Inn, and the the Bascom Center for Visual Arts,  just a few minutes away from 200 Main, where SGA participants had their lodging.
Located on a  six-acre former horse farm in Highlands, the Bascom’s major exhibitions highlight the work of the artists who live and work in the region, Bascom instructors and students, Artist Fellows and Residents, as well as world-renowned artists whose work might not otherwise be seen in this area. The Bascom's 3 galleries and the Winkler Sculpture and Nature Trail are host to approximately 10 exhibitions each year, which pair with our Outreach and Education departments to attract 20,000 visitors to The Bascom.
