Preparing for Stage 2 In-Person Classes
President Robbins has announced that we will increase the number of in-person classes on our campuses starting Monday, Feb. 22, in response to the continued low spread of COVID-19 among our campus community members.
All students who will be on campus for classes are required to participate in weekly mandatory testing.
As we take this important step forward with our reentry plans, it is imperative we do not relax our focus on preventive measures like wearing face coverings and staying physically distanced.
Please await more information from your instructors about these upcoming changes.

Launching Next Week: A One-Stop Hub for CALS Services (including an app!)
We’ve heard you: Knowing about – and connecting to – CALS services and resources can be confusing. Great news: that’s about to get a lot easier for you!
On Monday, February 22, 2021 CALS is launching eSMS, a web-based electronic student management system. eSMS brings together – in one location and through one url - CALS academic advising, life management counseling, career center, event RSVP, convocation registration and more. In addition to web access, you can also download the eSMS mobile app. How’s that for convenience?!
What does this mean for you? Starting on 2/22/2021 you’ll use eSMS to:
- Schedule appointments with your CALS academic advisors
- Drop-in for virtual advising hours
- Schedule appointments with the CALS Life Management Counselor
- Note: Distance/Yuma students will not use eSMS to schedule appointments with Yuma advisors. Appointments with Distance/Yuma advisors will continue to be scheduled through the existing process. Distance/Yuma students are encouraged to use eSMS to connect with all other CALS services!
Why the new system? eSMS is a one-stop hub for CALS students to connect with all CALS student services like academic advising, life management counseling, career center, event sign up, convocation registration, and so much more. Currently you use Trellis to schedule advising appointments and then a variety of channels – emails, forms, etc – to connect with other CALS services. Now, with eSMS, you’ll easily connect with CALS services from one place.
In adopting eSMS, CALS joins two UArizona colleges already using the system – the Eller College of Management (creators of eSMS) and the A Center. If you already use eSMS through Eller or the A Center your CALS profile will now be available as well.
What do you need to do? Right now, nothing! eSMS is student friendly but there’s always a learning curve with anything new. We want you to feel comfortable with eSMS and to navigate the system like a pro! Starting next week you’ll receive additional info with “how-to” tips to:
- Customize your eSMS profile
- Make advising appointments
- Drop-in for virtual advising
- Make appointments with life management counseling
What will be available starting 2/22? eSMS will launch with two core modules: academic advising and life management counseling. Throughout the semester additional CALS student services (like graduation registration, Career Center, event RSVP, and more) will be available to you through eSMS. We’ll let you know when those features become available!
We’re excited to launch eSMS for CALS students. We’re hopeful the system will make your student experience a bit easier and a bit more connected. And, of course, we’re always eager for ideas and suggestions for how we can improve things even more!

How are Things Going? Actually?
We ask, because we know the stress related to classes, finances, COVID, politics and protests can sometimes be overwhelming. We’re all feeling it.
If you haven’t looked into Wildcats R.I.S.E. yet, you should. It is a free support program for all UArizona students, Wildcats R.I.S.E. offers a safe place for you to connect with trained peers and talk about the stresses you may share.
Connect in a group setting or in a on-demand, one-on-one consultation. It’s completely up to you.
Talking through stress helps, especially when you’re talking to people who get it. And, they totally get it. That’s why we thought you should know that you can now get support right when you need it, for free, from people who understand.
