Dear Alumni and Friends,
Think of your morning commute. Is it a complete street that allows all forms of transportation to coexist—automobiles, public transportation, bicycles and foot traffic?
Most drivers don’t consider that question as they drive to work, but public health experts do. Public health is one of three new programs the College of Education, Health, and Human Services has introduced this fall in an effort to help UM-Dearborn graduates confront major health care issues affecting metropolitan Detroit and beyond.
The new programs—a master’s degree in health information technology and bachelor’s degrees in community health education and public health—allow CEHHS students to think about health in a broader context.
Education in health and human services will be one of the ways we’re going to make a significant impact on the metropolitan region. I encourage you to learn more about our new programs here, and also catch up on exciting news within the college in this month's CEHHS alumni e-newsletter.

Alumni Difference Makers
For more than 35 years, UM-Dearborn has honored outstanding alumni Victors who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference at their alma mater and in their community.
On October 24, UM-Dearborn plans to honor Julee Cowher ('95 B.A.), a kindergarten teacher at Spencer Elementary School in Brighton. Cowher was named the 2013 Elementary Science Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Science Teachers Association.
Beyond the ball fields
Hayatt Ali looks out across a city park and sees more than ball fields and tennis courts. He sees a mechanism for a city’s continued revival. As a summer intern at Healthy Detroit, Ali helped launch the state's first health park at Clark Park on Detroit's southwest side.
Bringing new life to old textbooks
Special education professor Kim Killu recently moved offices and purged a glut of teaching and learning resources in the process of relocating. That stockpile, along with materials from retiring professor Belinda Lazarus, is being shipped overseas to increase access to academic materials.
Dean Janosky named to FDA panel
CEHHS Dean Janine Janosky has been appointed to the Federal Drug Administration's Medical Device Resolution Panel. The five-member panel provides advice and recommendations in disputes between the FDA and medical device manufacturers.

Our world is shifting in dramatic and sudden ways. This is a pivotal time for our region, our state and our nation. America’s best colleges and universities are being asked to address the new realities of the 21st century.
Our world needs Victors. For more than 50 years, University of Michigan-Dearborn has focused on producing Victors who transform challenges into opportunities.
Join us Friday, October 24, as we celebrate Victors and their impact on the largest campaign in the university’s history. Experience a campus that will be transformed into a visual and engaging story of celebration. A celebrity emcee will help narrate the university’s impact on students and the region. Students will share how their lives have been transformed, while helping to power our region. The Michigan Marching Band will visit the campus for special evening performances. And celebrate your role in fostering positive change across southeast Michigan. You won’t want to miss this momentous occasion.
Because this is our world—and our world needs victors. Our world needs you. Be a victor for UM-Dearborn.
