Celebrating American's 250th
Council Member Bill Kling joined the community in celebrating America’s 250th birthday by walking in the American Eras Parade. This special event honored 250 years of American history while looking toward the future, highlighting the people, milestones and defining moments that shaped our nation.

Applications Open for Civic Engagement Academy
Applications are open for the fall cohort of the City’s Civic Engagement Academy (CEA). One of the City’s most popular interactive academies with residents, CEA is a free program designed to help residents understand how local government works and how they can play an active role in shaping their community. The deadline to apply is Friday, Aug. 21, at 10 p.m.

Happy Birthday! For the 106th Time!  
During the July 9 City Council meeting, Council Member Kling presented a resolution to Louise Garman – who recently celebrated her 106th birthday. She worked as a federal civil servant for 30 years at Fort Bliss near El Paso, Texas, and visited every state with her husband, Robert. Following her husband’s passing in 2003, Garman moved to Huntsville and attended Adult Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Music Audit Says Huntsville Hitting Right Notes
The City recently unveiled exciting results from the 2026 Music Audit conducted by global music consultancy Sound Diplomacy that outlined the remarkable progress of Huntsville’s ecosystem over the past eight years. Highlights include that Huntsville’s music sector supports more than 3,000 jobs and has generated $278.2 million in total economic output.

Learn About University Drive/Medical District Study
The City’s Planning Department will provide an update on the Transit Oriented Development Planning Study along University Drive and the Medical District at a public meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 6-8 p.m. Room 621, Huntsville City Hall, 305 Fountain Circle. The meeting will focus on continuing to receive public input and sharing findings in the study.

Huntsville Police Emphasizing School Zone Safety
School will soon be back in session and Huntsville Police is launching an initiative to keep children and safety patrol aides safe by urging drivers to closely follow the speed limit in school zones. The project will run Aug. 5-31 and will include additional officers in and around school zones during peak traffic hours.

Scatter Garden Planned at Maple Hill Cemetery
The City’s historic Maple Hill Cemetery is moving forward with plans to add a new amenity with the approval of an engineering services contract for a scatter garden. The space will be a peaceful garden for family and friends to say goodbye to loved ones who have been cremated. The work is expected to take about a year to complete.

City Council Approves Creation of TIF District
The City Council recently approved the creation of a tax increment financing (TIF) district that includes a portion of District 2. Known as TIF 9, it does not create a new tax. The TIF district captures revenue stemming from future growth in property tax revenue generated by new development within the district. Among the projects included in funding from the TIF is an expansion of the Von Braun Center. The Council also approved a 1% lodging tax to help fund expansion of the VBC.

District 4 Town Meeting
Council Member Kling will hold his monthly town meeting on Monday, Aug. 17, from 6-7 p.m. at the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library downtown branch, 915 Monroe St. SW.
