AUGUST 2017, v1

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

July 2017
We had a full house at our Brown Bag forum on July 18th, with record-setting attendance! Key initiatives were discussed, with highlights as follows:
  • Recycling – Mardy Baker, Life Enrichment Director, presented updates on how to recycle a variety of items in Montgomery County.  Ferne added information about corrugated cardboard recycling and stated that the blue recycling trailer will be moved to a new location adjacent to Showalter Center (exact location and timeframe to be announced soon) for use by staff and residents.  Additional trips to the recycling center will be made as needed in order to accommodate potential increased use.

  • Upcoming Repair Work at Showalter Center Kitchen – Due to needed repair work, the Showalter Center kitchen will be closed for approximately one week, tentatively scheduled from July 26 through August 2.  During this time, the Showalter dining staff will work out of the Kroontje Center kitchen to prepare and transport meals to Showalter Center.  The Fireside Grill will be closed, and the main dining room, the Pine Room, will be limited to Showalter Center residents only.  Those independent living residents who rely on Showalter Center for their meals will continue to be served; please contact William Lester at 443-3427 to discuss any needs or concerns you may have.

  • Dinner Hours at the Huckleberry Café – Plans continue to offer dinner service on Tuesday evenings, as well as Sunday brunch. We have been delayed due to difficulty with recruiting the additional staff needed to offer these expanded services.  This is a problem throughout Warm Hearth Village and nation-wide.

  • External Independent Audit – The Finance & Audit Committee of our Board of Directors has recently decided to engage a new audit firm to conduct the annual financial audit of Warm Hearth Village.  Brown Edwards has been hired for this purpose for a 3-year period and we look forward to working with them.

  • Onsite Medical Clinic – Carilion Clinic and Warm Hearth have agreed on a lease price and terms.  Due to the length of time it has taken to reach this agreement, construction bid prices have expired and need to be confirmed.  We hope to have the costs back by the first week of August and, if they have not escalated too much, we will be ready to move forward with this project.

  • New IL Housing Project – Our architect and a regional builder have prepared a draft schematic design of this project, and were able to considerably reduce the estimated cost per unit.  The project now consists of two 18-unit apartment buildings with 6 apartments per floor.  The proposed location is still at the intersection of Litton Lane and Showalter Drive.  Initial response to the project by focus groups was very enthusiastic about the design, less so about the proposed life lease pricing.  We are currently surveying our entire lead list to gather more widespread feedback, while continuing to work with the project team to identify opportunities to further reduce cost.
Many thanks to all who attended this meeting, and for your thoughtful questions and comments.  Please join us at our next Brown Bag Forum on Tuesday, September 5th, at Noon in Tall Oaks Hall.  We appreciate your involvement and input!
All the Best,
Ferne
