Dear Tulane Students,
Today, Sept. 20, is National Voter Registration Day. Voting empowers all to make their voices heard at local and national levels.
As a student at Tulane, you can register and vote here in New Orleans and make an impact on important local issues. Or you can stay registered in your home state and cast your vote on issues or candidates you care deeply about. Whatever you choose, Tulane provides access to Turbo Vote where you can find information about voter registration and voting by mail.
Tulane has also formed a new Civic Engagement Coalition comprised of students, faculty, and staff, from different departments, student clubs, and units on campus. The Coalition is focused on providing easy access to voter registration information, promoting our Registered Student Organizations that have a civic or political focus, and creating spaces for dialogue on issues of importance to students.
The Coalition’s kick-off event, Chicken and Civic Engagement will take place on Sept. 28 at 5:30 pm in the Stibbs Conference room on the second floor of the LBC. This event will start with a conversation about the need for a dialogue and the importance of voting. The conversation will be led by Stephanie Grace (editorial director and columnist at The Times-Picayune/The Advocate/Nola.com), State Rep. Richard Nelson (R-Mandeville), and Tulane Political Science Professor Scott Nolan. Following the panel, students will be able to explore opportunities to join civically minded clubs on campus. If you are not sure whether you want to register to vote locally or keep your voter registration in your home state, this event will have information on making this decision. We will have voter registration tables as well at the event.
We look forward to seeing you and to hearing your ideas about these important issues.
