You may know hibiscus as a bright garden flower (which you can often spot at Plantas El Rey!), but did you know it can also be harvested and used to make a refreshing tea? The edible calyces (the fleshy parts surrounding the flower) can be dried and steeped in hot water to make a vibrant red tea with a cranberry-like flavor. Hibiscus tea can be enjoyed hot or iced—and might we suggest adding a little local honey to balance the tartness?

You can also use hibiscus to make agua fresca, mix it into lemonade, or steep it into a simple syrup for cocktails and mocktails. Beyond beverages, it adds a bright pop of color and a nice, tangy flavor to jellies, sauces, and other recipes.

Next time you're at the market, pick some up from Jamey at B5 Farm and try brewing your own!
