Hello, Fellow Dog Lovers!
As dog lovers, we have a lot to be thankful for, don't we? The gift of unwavering companionship and reliability that our dogs give us every day is something that is unique to pet ownership - especially with dogs.
Having just celebrated my personal favorite holiday (Thanksgiving, for those of you not in the US), I've had some much-needed time to just 'be' with my dogs, and to enjoy those precious moments with Sadie and Jasmine.
While we here at Positively had some downtime over the holiday weekend, we've also been working hard for the past several weeks on some exciting new developments and projects that I can't wait to share with you soon.
Read on to find out more about some of them, and keep your eyes peeled on social media and in your email inbox for some big announcements in the coming days!
Positively,
Victoria Stilwell Signature

REALITY CHECK: 9 THINGS THAT YOUR DOG WANTS YOU TO UNDERSTAND
Knowledge in all forms seems to wax and wane according to the dynamics of the times that we live in. This is consistent on all subjects but in particular, with dog behavior knowledge. We have come so far with our understanding of dog behavior and how to modify it, yet old school techniques and thought processes remain in the forefront of the public eyes and ears.
The past refuses to fade away, and dogs pay for this with their psyches and sometimes even their lives.
The only part of the ancient dog behavior knowledge that is truly accurate yet hasn’t seemed to be retained as common sense knowledge is to allow dogs to actually be dogs.

NO NEED TO DECLAW
Saving cats' claws may also save their lives.
There’s increasing data to demonstrate that once declawed, cats wind up at animal shelters due to behavioral problems. Or they may wind up in animal shelters because they do have their claws and are scratching in all the wrong places.
Whether or not to declaw remains an emotional issue, and it seems the United States is making moves to gain on the rest of the world.
After a lengthy political struggle. Denver just became the first city outside California to ban declaw in cats....

INTRODUCING POSITIVELY TV... AND MORE!
In the coming weeks, look for several important announcements about some new platforms and ways to engage with the Positively Community and Victoria even more directly.
Among the new opportunities is the soon-to-be launched Positively TV!
We're hard at work putting the finishing touches on what we think will be one of the coolest dog-related channels available. Featuring all of Victoria's video content in one centralized location, it will also include new featured video content only available on the channel.
You can also watch the content on multiple devices with a simple, streamlined single sign-on process. So if you start watching a great training video on your iPhone, you can pick up where you left off on your Apple TV when you get home and then finish it on your laptop in bed.
More info about this exciting new channel will be coming soon, as well as other cool new ways to be a part of the conversation, so be sure to keep an eye on your email inbox and on Victoria's social media platforms for news on how you can get involved!
YOUR PUPPY IS NOT A BLANK SLATE...
Here’s why…
Your puppy is a product of its parents’ genes.
These provide the blueprint for appearance, temperament and behavior. This is why a Jack Russell looks and acts like a Jack Russell, and a Labrador looks and acts like a Labrador. If you want a dog that will look and act like a Labrador, you are going to need to choose a Labrador, not a Jack Russell.
But wait, there’s more. Within the Labrador breed you will find differences in appearance, temperament and behavior too. They still aren’t Jack Russells, but they aren't clones either.

JENNEL COOPER
Jennel graduated from the Arizona Canine Academy in 1999.  She earned a bachelors degree in communication from William Paterson University and continues her education in animal and canine behavior through various seminars and conferences around the country.

Over the years Jennel has provided hundreds of hours consulting and volunteer work with shelter and rescue organizations throughout New Jersey, Arizona, Texas, Ohio and the Carolina's.  Every dog she's ever lived with has been a rescue and she believes each one has contributed to her passion for the canine species.

Of all her dogs, the one who particularly influenced her path to training and behavior consulting was Jenga.  She was adopted as a puppy from the North Shore Animal League in New York and after training with Jennel, was signed by a Manhattan animal talent agent.  From this, Jenga and Jennel were presented with many different talent opportunities but her most memorable was on Saturday Night Live when she worked with Katie Holmes, Will Ferrell, Jimmy Falon, Tracy Morgan, and Maya Rudolph.

Jenga passed away in the fall of 2010 but will always be remembered and we honor her as the face of the Tega K9 logo.

Counter Surfing
1. Blocking access to places where food is left out by using baby gates or putting the dog in another room when you have company means there is no opportunity for your dog to fail.

2. If this is not a realistic option, you can try tethering your dog to you so that he is with you at all times.

3. If you are working in the kitchen and unable to use a baby gate, draw an imaginary line along the floor and teach your dog to stay behind that line.
