Tufts Student Life
PARENT NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2020
Dear Parents and Families,
We hope you're enjoying the first week of March and that some of you are looking forward to time with your student over Spring Break.  This month, we're bringing you updates from several different departments at Tufts.

Community and Travel Guidance Related to COVID-19

Tufts’ Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the circumstances surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) along with various public health partners. No members of the Tufts community have been identified as having the coronavirus, and we continue to be informed that the risk to the Tufts community remains low.
To provide all members of the Tufts community with up-to-date information at all times, the University has established a webpage of Community and Travel Guidance Related to the Coronavirus. This resources includes all messages sent to the community, as well as external resources and information about preventative measures.
We know that members of our community are wondering about the longer-term impacts of COVID-19 as we approach spring break and summer. The University is currently developing a series of contingency plans related to housing, academics, travel, and other areas in the event that the impact of the spread of the coronavirus increases on our campuses. Tufts will share information with students, parents, faculty, and staff as soon as it becomes available.

Career Corner: Conversations with the Tufts Career Center

Focus on Internship Funding

Internships are a wonderful way to develop career competencies, make connections with employers, and gain a sense of confidence in one’s work and career direction. Each summer, the Tufts Career Center funds 50-60 undergraduate students doing unpaid internships for a minimum of 300 hours. Selected students receive $4,000, and they must secure their internships prior to grant application deadlines (March 11 for international and first-round domestic applications and April 6 for second-round domestic applications).
Encourage your student to review the Summer Internship Grant webpage, which includes descriptions of the 7 types of grants available, information about the application process and components, grant selection criteria, recipient requirements, and answers to FAQs.

What's Happening Academically?

Mid-Semester Reviews and the Academic Residency Requirement

We are halfway through the spring semester and students are immersed in their classes. Each semester we encourage students to take time to review overall requirements for graduation and to review their transcript by logging into SIS to confirm everything is correct. The Bulletin and the Academic Advising website are good resources for students to clarify the general requirements for their undergraduate degree and academic policies. Any questions students have about requirements or policies can be addressed by a member of their Advising Team.
One frequently overlooked graduation item is the Academic Residency Requirement. Undergraduate students must complete 8 full-time semesters of study in order to earn their degree. (Transfer students must spend a minimum of 4 full-time semesters of study, and students in the Combined Degree program with the New England Conservatory must spend 10 full-time semesters of study in order to earn their degree.) While many students complete this requirement simply by being full-time students for the number of semesters required, there is an option that allows students (with the exception of transfer students) to complete one full-time semester of residence with pre-matriculation and/or Tufts summer credits. This option allows students to graduate one semester early or be part-time during one semester of their senior year. Spring is a great time to plan Tufts summer courses for this option. Students who wish to discuss this option further should contact their Advising Dean.
