The Arbor Lodge Shelter’s mural team, Qué Lo Gì, hosted three hands-on painting days at the Historic Kenton Firehouse, inviting the public to contribute to the design with their own paintings! Qué Lo Gì is composed of artists Paola De La Cruz & Lillyanne Pham. Their collaborative practice is focused on re-orienting the ways in which art, artists, institutions and resources exist.
Part of an ongoing shelter expansion by the JOHS, Arbor Lodge Shelter will be converted into a long-term, purpose-built shelter focused on serving 80-120 people in the North Portland area. Qué Lo Gì’s mural design for the shelter was inspired by the Vietnamese proverb, “When the pain has passed, one forgets the medicine.” Rooting themselves in healing practices, the duo spent three months within the Kenton and Arbor Lodge communities to craft a design that reflects how community members make space for each other.
If you’re in the neighborhood, look out for Qué Lo Gì as they begin installation this month!
