Spring Semester 2021 - Issue 15

A Note from School Director Ed Mitchell

Congratulations to our 2021 class of graduates.

Not even a plague could deter this excellent class of graduates. The diversity of backgrounds, interests, and achievements in this group makes teaching a pleasure and a gift.

Despite the limited access the students had to the outside world, they were not limited in their imagination. This year SAID students won national awards for their work from the Urban Land Institute, were recognized for their professional achievements, and helped mentor the younger students in our programs. They applied the Green New Deal into a neighborhood in Cincinnati, explored the Ohio River; constructed plans for creative affordable housing; addressed global warming; envisioned lively new public spaces in Bengaluru, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Beijing, Birmingham, Youngstown, and Mexico City; projected utopian and dystopian futures; envisioned new worlds of nomadic caravans, and robotic scavengers; sought bold visions to address our relationships with plant and animal life, the human subconscious, and the digital unconscious of our virtual world; sought creative solutions to underrepresented communities and addresses racial bias and disenfranchisement.
It was a challenging year, but the students all persevered and were never, or rarely ever disheartened or discouraged. The world needs more young architects like this group.
Be sure to check out all the student thesis and capstone works that are being digitally displayed via the virtual DAAPworks.

The Zoom generation may have missed out on model building and bowling, but they more than made up for it in added skills in new media. And they have projected those skills into terrific work that upholds our high standards and challenges us to constantly invent and create. This year’s graduates have figured out ways to project bold futures when the immediate future has often seemed in doubt. We at the School of Architecture and Interior Design congratulate our graduating students on all their achievements.

Regards,

The Outstanding Graduating Students of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning are selected by their faculty based on their academic achievement, professional activities, and participation in the life of the University through service to the program, college, and/or University. DAAP is proud to share the achievements of these students.

Lamia Albunni

Architecture | Bachelor of Science in Architecture
Quite apart from Lamia's Albunni's impeccable competence as an architect, she demonstrates the most desirable quality in a designer/collaborator, namely her capacity to anticipate problems and to seek out, develop and adapt the tools needed to keep design work flowing and flourishing. Her work ethic was truly unmatched in studio as well as her thoughtful and rigorous preparation for each day. Although still a student, Lamia has shown herself to be a diplomatic and enthusiastic member of her class and has been able to harness her own creativity in a generous, and selfless manner. View her capstone project here.

Callie Forsythe

Interior Design | Bachelor of Science in Interior Design
Callie Forsythe is a student who deserves to be recognized for her academic excellence. Callie has been an exceptionally strong student with well-formed ideas and a notable interest in visual communication and design theory. Her verbal and written abilities are exceptional at the undergraduate level. She exhibits an excellent ability to express herself graphically, conceptually, and verbally. Callie is a talented and rigorous student who sets the pace for the studio. Callie has been a wonderful ambassador for SAID in the college and in her professional involvements during her time in DAAP.  View her capstone project here.

Todd Funkhouser

Architecture | Master of Architecture (7 Semester Track)

Todd Funkhouser always asks a tough, thoughtful question in the classroom and in public lectures. His studio work is consistently excellent. In his three years, he has been a student leader, an excellent GA, and shown great professional promise in his co-ops. His thesis for a datacenter has looked at the “21st century sublime” in provocative ways, and he has taken on every challenge raised by the faculty and most of all by himself. View Todd's thesis here.

Brendan Girten

Architecture | Master of Architecture (6 semester track)

Brendan has an exceptional GPA and had done original work using computational tools and a a vivid imagination. He has combined the science of the algorithm with lyrical fictions about the future. His urban studio project, his work in the Urban Futures studio and his thesis are memorable projects, deserving of the highest of accolades. View Brendan's thesis project here.
