Barack and Michelle Obama in NYC, Omarosa Beefs with April Ryan Again, and Catherine Cortez Masto Pushes on DACA
Subscribe
While Donald Trump continues to tweet about the NFL, this is what’s happening:  3.5 million American citizens face a humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico. Trump did find time to tweet about it but forgot to use language offering any comfort or compassion. A lot more on Puerto Rico below. What he’s not tweeting about? The six current and former WH advisors, including Jared Kushner, Stephen Bannon, and Reince Priebus, who have occasionally used private email addresses for official business. Will the “lock them up” chants resurface at 45’s next rally? Also, the effort to repeal the ACA appears to be dead. But even as it goes in the ground, Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) are throwing themselves on the casket screaming “no, no, no.” We’ve all been to those types of funerals before. It’s time to let go. And, as if we don’t have enough to worry about in the homeland, we’re inching closer to war. North Korea’s foreign minister characterized Donald Trump’s threats to annihilate his country if it attacked the U.S. as a declaration of war, adding that Pyongyang now has the right to shoot down American warplanes. So seriously … does Home Depot sell bunkers? Also, as an FYI, former NY Congressman Anthony Weiner was sentenced yesterday to 21 months in prison for sexting a 15-year-old. Here’s what’s up for Tuesday...

Obama Spoke in NYC on Monday -- Here’s What Happened
On Monday, former President Barack Obama delivered 25-minute prepared remarks in Manhattan at a conference on healthcare sponsored by the brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald. During his remarks, he undertook a professorial review of what the health care law had accomplished, considered its remaining problems, and swept through some potential solutions. “This is a big system, and it’s complicated, but what to do that would make it better is actually not that mysterious. But it does require putting ideology aside,” Obama told a ballroom of some 500 marquee industry names, with representatives from hedge funds like Citadel and Balyasny, investment firms like Bain and Ares, and biotech companies like Amgen. Most of the attendees were Cantor clients. There has been some fodder about 44’s paid speeches, largely from conservatives. “Since leaving office, President Obama has spent his time doing public and private events, both paid and unpaid, that are true to his values and his record,” Kevin Lewis, the former president’s spokesman, wrote in an email to the NYT. Lewis added that the paid speeches had helped make it possible for President Obama to contribute $2 million to employment and job-training programs for low-income young people in Chicago. More here.
Michelle Obama Works Out to Beyoncé While 44 Surprises Attendees at a Fundraiser
While former President Obama was giving a speech, Michelle Obama was getting down to Beyoncé during a workout class. Page Six reports that the former FLOTUS was seen working up a sweat with friends during a private class at fitness guru Tracy Anderson’s 59th Street studio. “They were dancing to ‘Drunk In Love,’” said a spy. After the former president's speech, Barack Obama headed to Delaware and surprised more than 600 people attending the annual Beau Biden Foundation Cocktail Reception and Silent Auction, which works to expand and continue work training adults in child abuse prevention and kids and families in bully prevention. An audible gasp was heard when the former President, along with former VP Joe Biden, were introduced to the audience. "If I'd known that you were giving away a car on the hole-in-one, I would have played," Obama joked. On a more serious note, Obama said he was there to lend his voice and support to a family that he cares deeply about and "to honor a man that I thought the world of and to say thank you to all of you for supporting this wonderful cause." Cortez Masto Wants DACA Deadline Extended
In the wake of three massive storms that have disrupted the day-to-day lives of millions of people, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and 37 of her colleagues on Monday called on the Trump administration to extend the crucial October 5 deadline for DREAMers to renew their DACA status. The group made the request in a letter to Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke. “These major hurricanes significantly disrupted day to day living and operations in these states and territories,” the lawmakers wrote. “It would be appropriate for the government to extend the October 5, 2017 deadline nationwide to allow individuals adequate time to meet the government’s recent request.” They go on to say “Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico are still working to recover and will be for some time. An extension of the deadline would provide DACA recipients more time to collect the $495 application fee and gather the necessary documents to accurately complete the renewal application.” More here.
Take a Look at the Members of the House Republican Task Force on DACA
House Republican leaders say they want to make sure there is a consensus among their members on legislation related to DACA, and so they have formed a task force comprised of members of committees with jurisdiction over immigration matters. The Trump administration caused a commotion when it announced that it was phasing out DACA. The task force is just one of several efforts in the House to move on DACA legislation, Roll Call reports. It includes several members considered to be hard-line on immigration, and three minority members of Congress: Raúl Labrador (ID), Mario Díaz Balart (FL), and Will Hurd (TX). Díaz-Balart was the only member of the current task force to vote ‘yes’ on DREAM Act legislation in 2010 (Labrador and Hurd were not in Congress at the time) and ‘no’ in 2014 on a bill to defund the DACA program. Beef Between Omarosa and April Reignites at CBCF ALC '17 Gala
At the CBCF ALC '17 gala on Saturday night, co-host Anthony Anderson may have reignited the beef between WH reporter April Ryan and Omarosa. Anderson apparently made a comment in jest about Omarosa being outside and unable to get into the dinner (the WH staffer was actually already inside). April tried to keep her composure and dismissed the comment while some in the audience booed the mention of Omarosa’s name and others laughed. As the dinner proceeded, Omarosa tweeted an insult about April (which has since been deleted) which read, “It’s so sad that a person has a 20 year career and their big break (TV, Hosting, Awards) only comes because of me and DJT. You are welcome!!!” To which April replied via Twitter, "I was on a book tour and on tv before any of you all were at the White House. Don't flatter yourself.” Apparently, that wasn't the only beef that happened that night. April and Anthony had quite the jovial exchange over HBCUs. April, a graduate of Morgan State, reminded Anderson, a graduate of Howard University, that Bears eat Bison. Ooooh! More on the Omarosa Twitter beef here.
Funding for the Defense Intelligence Agency Could Be on Chopping Block
Roll Call reports that the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) may be in danger of losing its funding. The House Intelligence Committee, which is aiming for a radical overhaul of the military’s spy arm, sees it as bloated and ineffective. The Committee’s report accompanying the fiscal 2018 intelligence authorization bill takes aim at the DIA by calling for the elimination of a handful of missions that are “tangential to the DIA’s core missions and responsibilities” or are “duplicative of functions conducted elsewhere.” The agency is run by Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart (pictured). The DIA is one of the three elements of the intelligence community (the CIA and the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research are the other two) that are all-source agencies, meaning they use all varieties of intelligence -- whether collected by satellites, humans, or cyber -- in making its analyses. Russian Ops Used Black Lives Matter Ads on Facebook
WaPo reports that the batch of more than 3,000 Russian-bought ads that Facebook is preparing to turn over to Congress show some ads promoting African American rights groups, including Black Lives Matter, and others suggesting that these same groups pose a rising political threat. The previously undisclosed ads suggest that the operatives worked off evolving lists of racial, religious, political and economic themes. They used these to create pages, write posts, and craft ads that would appear in users’ news feeds -- with the apparent goal of appealing to one audience and alienating another. The House and Senate Intelligence committees plan to begin reviewing the Facebook ads in coming weeks. More here.

Three Political Operatives Join Hustle
Hustle, a peer-to-peer messaging platform that scales the way organizations communicate with people, today announced the formation of its Strategic and Political Advisory Board, which will advise Hustle's leadership and go-to-market teams on how to apply their technology to humanize campaigns and advocacy groups. The inaugural members of the board include Reverend Leah Daughtry, the former CEO of the DNC Committee in 2008 and 2016, where, both times, she hired the most diverse staffs in the history of the event; Minyon Moore, a Principal Political Advisor to both former President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton during the Clinton administration and a partner at Dewey Square Group; and Jotaka Eaddy, VP of Policy, Engagement & Impact for LendUp and a political strategist who’s worked with the NAACP and United Nations. These political organizers are charged with building a bridge between the Beltway and Silicon Valley. More here.
DCCC Builds Field Team
The DCCC has brought on Anatole Jenkins as their Deputy National Field Director. He has worked as an organizer since 2011 when he was the Obama for America Regional Field Director in Las Vegas. Since then the Catholic University graduate organized for President Barack Obama in Maryland before moving to Hillary Clinton’s camp in 2015. He was once again on familiar ground back in Nevada in 2015 before bouncing around to North Carolina and Minnesota. In October 2013, Barack Obama's Twitter and Facebook accounts were hacked. In the same hacking, Jenkins' email was hacked revealing details of Barack Obama's political organization. At the time, he was the Fundraising Manager for Obama. Official representatives of the Syrian Electronic Army, a loose group of hackers who support Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, claimed responsibility. Anatole has been quoted as saying, “ The truth of the matter is, as an organizer, you're essentially being asked to do the impossible.” Well, the 2018 midterms await. More about him here.

CBC Chair Brings #TakeAKnee Into Focus
A statement issued by CBC Chair Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-LA), calls into focus the real issue over athletes taking a knee. Referencing the numerous statements that came out over the weekend, the Congressman made the point that none of the remarks explicitly mentioned the reason why Colin Kaepernick and many others are taking a knee during the national anthem. “They are taking a knee to protest police officers who kill unarmed African Americans – men and women, adults and children, parents and grandparents – with impunity. They are taking a knee to protest a justice system that says that being Black is enough reason for a police officer to fear for his or her life.” He offered some harsh words for 45. “I call again on President Trump to start acting like a president and to stop acting like a child. It is no surprise that athletes and others do not want to come to the White House when President Trump calls Black athletes who exercise their First Amendment right to free speech ‘a son of bitch’ and calls White men who yell racial epithets ‘very fine people.’ Perhaps President Trump did not notice that many of those White men were carrying the American flag.” Read the full statement here.
Hakeem Jeffries Gives Impassioned Speech on the House Floor Supporting Steph Curry, Lebron James, and Colin Kaepernick
Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) took to the House floor yesterday to defend athletes Steph Curry, Lebron James, and Colin Kaepernick. In an impassioned speech, Jeffries stated, “In this country, the African American community has been forced to endure slavery, rape, kidnap, lynching, Jim Crow segregation, mass incarceration, and a police brutality epidemic that continues to this very day. It was in this context that athletes like Colin Kaepernick bravely chose to kneel down so that others may have the courage to stand up.” He went on to say, “There are some who chose to criticize their actions as unpatriotic but their actions are uniquely American. Liberty and Justice for all is an American value.” He goes on to criticize the administration’s comments by saying, “this is the same group of people ... who regularly refuse to criticize Vladimir Putin ... How dare you criticize us about what’s patriotic.” The Congressman said he wanted to make it clear that there are Members of Congress who have the athletes' backs. Native Americans Remind Everyone They’re Not Your Mascot Amid #TakeAKnee Movement
While People Support the #TakeAKnee movement continues, some Native American activists are reminding people of their #NotYourMascot movement. Born in an era when racism and bigotry were accepted by the dominant culture, "Indian" sports brands have grown to become multi-million dollar franchises. Native American activist Tara Houska (pictured) was not impressed when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement in response to the president’s verbal attack on NFL players. “Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL,” was Goodell's response. Houska replied via tweet, “'Divisive comments' denounced by @nfl. What about the slur you fought Native Americans in court for 25yrs to keep? #Hypocrisy #ChangeTheName.” See some of her commentary here.

Florida Legislators Introduce Bill to Help Seniors During National Disasters
Florida Congresswomen Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R) and Lois Frankel (D) on Monday introduced bipartisan legislation to ensure that senior citizens and nursing home residents are protected during natural disasters. The Protecting Senior During Natural Disasters Act would bring together local disaster officials and top government officials to evaluate how to best communicate and protect vulnerable communities and ensure that proper disaster plans and responses are in place. The legislation comes on the heels of 11 deaths in a Miami-area nursing home after Hurricane Irma passed through the region; that matter is currently under investigation. “The shocking reality of 11 gruesome deaths at a South Florida nursing home after Hurricane Irma ripped through our area will spur many changes to procedures and regulations guiding these institutions and we hope that our bill will help to protect vulnerable seniors,” said Ros-Lehtinen in a statement. Florida Senators Bill Nelson (D) and Marco Rubio (R) introduced similar bipartisan legislation in the upper chamber. More here.
Wilson Warned Officials About Power Outage
A day before eleven residents from the same Florida nursing home died, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) joined other state and federal officials on a Hurricane Irma recovery conference call and warned that the situation could quickly turn deadly if power was not restored to local senior facilities. “Immediately, I started to get calls. A lot of them didn’t have power, and that’s why I was raising a concern,” Wilson told The Hill. “My message was: They needed to assist with turning the lights on and getting the generators fixed in those nursing homes, because someone is going to die,” Wilson said. The Congresswoman’s account suggests that officials at all levels of government -- including FEMA, Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) office, and members of Congress -- were all made aware of the dangerous and deteriorating conditions at local nursing homes at least 12 hours before the first resident died at the sweltering Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. House Leader Pledges Aid to Puerto Rico
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said Congress is working with the administration on humanitarian aid for Puerto Rico to help the island recover from hurricanes Irma and Maria. Puerto Rico was hit particularly hard by Maria, resulting in widespread damage and island-wide power outages that could last for months. Meanwhile, members of Congress took to Twitter to voice their displeasure with Trump’s focus on criticizing NFL and NBA players while virtually ignoring the situation in Puerto Rico -- Congressman Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) tweeted that “It's disappointing #Trump spent the weekend attacking #NFL #NBA & turning his back on hurricane relief efforts,” and Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-CA) tweeted, “@POTUS I know antagonizing Black athletes is simply irresistible but there are MILLIONS in the Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico that need help.” Lawmakers are also working on aid packages for areas across Texas, Florida, and other regions of the Southeast that were affected, and legislators will have to increase the National Flood Insurance Program’s borrowing authority beyond the $30 billion gap so that the agency can pay out claims. More here.
Former Presidents Add Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands to their Relief Campaign
The fundraising campaign launched by all five of the living former presidents has added Hurricane Maria -- which hit Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands earlier this month -- to its appeal for recovery relief. The One America Appeal campaign will allow donors to contribute funds to United for Puerto Rico and The Fund for the Virgin Islands. It is an effort by former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. More here.
Velázquez Asks Admin for Waivers to Help Puerto Rico
In a letter to Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) is asking the Trump administration to grant a temporary one-year waiver to Puerto Rico on a law that requires any goods shipped to the island be on a U.S.-flagged ship with a U.S. crew, which Puerto Rico officials say is much more costly and prevents them from receiving much-needed shipments directly from outside the United States while it grapples with post-Hurricane Maria recovery. “The island is now facing an unprecedented uphill battle to rebuild its homes, businesses, and communities. Temporarily loosening these requirements — for the express purpose of disaster recovery — will allow Puerto Rico to have access to the oil needed for its power plants, food, medicines, clothing, and building supplies,” Velázquez writes in the letter. The Trump administration has said that there aren't any plans to waive the shipping restriction, arguing that there is a sufficient number of U.S. barges to move goods to the island. The Congresswoman is also asking that the administration provide a waiver on federal regulations requiring that jurisdictions match FEMA funds they receive, saying Puerto Rico’s financial resources are already at a breaking point. See the entire letter here.

Obama Appears in Mailer for CA State Assembly Race
The race to replace Congressman Jimmy Gómez (D-CA) in the state Assembly is well underway in Los Angeles. So far it has been mostly printed material, featuring local leaders and endorsements from groups including Planned Parenthood and the Sierra Club, and some door-knocking in northeast LA. But the LA Times reports that one mailer featured former President Barack Obama. "Want to know what kind of job Gabriel Sandoval will do in the Assembly? Listen to the people he's worked with in the past," the mailer reads, above Obama's official White House portrait. In small type, it notes that Sandoval "served as a Senior Civil Rights Attorney and Senior Advisor" for a WH Initiative within the Department of Education. Obama is not involved in the race at all. More here.
Antonio Villaraigosa Beefs with Labor
Former LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa launched his political career off his work as a union organizer, and labor played a critical role in getting him elected to office. But now, his old friends appear to be his new enemies. According to a report by the LA Times, he recently blasted the city’s teachers union where he once worked as “the largest obstacle to creating quality schools.” Some say the California gubernatorial candidate picked this fight because of donations from wealthy supporters of the education reform movement and the ability to cast himself as a man willing to stand up to one of his party’s most influential constituencies. He argues his motivation is pure. The rifts began once he became mayor in 2005, when he crossed picket lines during the first major city workers’ strike in 25 years. He later clashed with unions over furloughs and layoffs as the city grappled with the recession, and tensions grew exponentially when he tried to take over the city's school district. More here.
Court Allows Parts of Texas’ ‘Show Me Your Papers’ Law to Move Forward
The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday allowed key parts of Texas’ ‘Show Me Your Papers’ law to go into effect despite a lower court’s ruling blocking the law. While the appeals process winds its way through the courts, Texas can now require law enforcement to honor ICE requests to detain people in local jails for possible deportation under SB4, the state’s ‘sanctuary cities’ law. However, the ruling appeared to leave some wiggle room for local jurisdictions to be able to still decline requests they believe could violate constitutional rights or other laws. The law’s opponents argue it violates the Fourth Amendment by requiring police to detain people suspected of immigration violations without probable cause. WaPo has more here.

GOP Senators Introduce DACA Legislation
Three Republican Senators -- Thom Tillis (FL), James Lankford (OK), and Orrin Hatch (UT) -- on Monday, introduced legislation they call a “fair and compassionate” merit-based solution to help the nearly 800,000 “DREAMers” and others under DACA. The Solution for Undocumented Children through Careers Employment Education and Defending Our Nation Act would require that in order for a recipient to receive “conditional status” to stay in the U.S., they must maintain gainful employment, or serve in the military, or be pursuing a higher education degree. Requirements for eligibility include having arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16, having a high school diploma or equivalent, and passing an extensive criminal background check, in addition to paying off any possible tax liabilities. After five years, a recipient can become eligible for another five years of protected status, and when that is up, apply for a green card to start the naturalization process. "We have millions of great young people that can add a great deal to our country," Hatch said. "We need a permanent solution to this problem not just kicking it down the road ... We need to develop a solution that will recognize the positive contributions that Dreamers can make to our society." More here from CBS.
