| The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a United States and Canada bi-national organization charged with the mission of aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning in the defense of North America. They also track Santa Claus every December 24 through their NORAD Tracks Santa program. Since 1955, NORAD has used satellites, high-powered radar, jet fighters and special Santa cameras to track Santa Claus as he makes his journey around the world.

Branding Names: from Air Jordan to Linsanity and Trump Toilets
2016 was a winning year for Western trademarks in China. It produced an unprecedented number of decisions – two, to be exact – in which China won praise for protecting foreign trademarks, affirming intellectual property rights, and developing a friendlier environment for international businesses. The only loser was trademark law itself, as the two decisions illustrate that the Chinese courts can be just as well-intentioned and misguided as the Western courts when it comes to foreign trademarks.

Examining Ambiguities in Patent Examination Guidelines by Dr. Siva Thambisetty
As part of the IP Osgoode Speaks Series, Dr. Siva Thambisetty, an associate professor of law at the London School of Economics, visited Osgoode Hall Law School to speak on the subject of patent dialect. The main focus of her talk, entitled, “Is Patent Law Evasive or Merely Elusive?”, was to highlight the issue of ambiguities that exist in the European patent dialect and to discuss the potential motivations behind reserving these ambiguities. Due to the international and extra-jurisdictional aspects of enforcing and administrating patent law in general, and similarities between Canadian and European patent regimes, the concerns and issues raised in her research are relevant in Canada and could trigger similar discussions regarding the Canadian patent system.
