CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT

Wellness Champion, Cheryl Barrett, used the Champion Fund to purchase lunch boxes and reusable water bottles for her lab. The 7CAM clinical laboratory does not allow food or drink due to the biohazard samples tested in the laboratory. As a result, dehydration is a problem among staff. To help solve this problem, Cheryl proposed purchasing reusable water bottles the staff could keep in their locker outside of the lab to have easy access to liquid. Additionally, Cheryl requested funding for lunch boxes that store prepared food. By providing lunch containers, Cheryl eliminated a barrier of the lack of access to food in the CAM and partnered with MyWay to Health to provide education surrounding healthy eating.

Applications for the 2024 Champion Fund will be available after the Wellness Champion Summit, April 3rd. Join us at the Summit to learn more about how to complete a successful application.

HR WELL-BEING TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Meet Emily Strong: Wellness Coordinator

What are some of your favorite ways to cultivate well-being in your life?
My goal for all things, is to find ways to have fun and make whatever I am doing as enjoyable as possible for myself. If I am not enjoying it or having fun, I will not continue doing it very long.
For my physical well-being, I prefer to stay active by playing my favorite sports – basketball, softball, kickball, indoor soccer, etc. Some of the teams I play for I have been with for years, but I recently also joined the St. Louis Arc as a community athlete where I am able to workout my body while connecting with a special community in St. Louis at the same time.
For my mental well-being, I have made it a priority to find different ways to let myself rest from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Some of my favorites are coloring, driving with the windows down and the top open in my Bronco, getting my dogs out for adventures, and any shenanigans I can find to spend time with my nephews. Even if it is simply playing video games while face-timing them.
The most important, and probably the hardest part of my well-being journey, has been learning to give myself grace. Whether it’s for a missed workout to give my body a little extra rest or saying no to making extra plans with others so I can focus on my well-being, I realized that perfect doesn’t exist, and taking care of myself isn’t selfish, but a necessity.
Thank you,
Emily Strong

HR Well-being is an employee health initiative that, in partnership with Washington University experts, offers opportunities for employees to improve their physical and emotional well-being. This initiative focuses on developing evidence-based programs and making personal connections to provide employees with valuable and fun experiences that improve their health. We aim to foster a culture that prioritizes employee health and well-being as integral to the mission of teaching, research, and patient care, and create an environment where the healthier choice is the easiest choice; where employees are empowered to choose wellness.
WashU Wellness Champions help us understand the needs within different work environments, promote the importance of personal health, and encourage their coworkers to engage in wellness program offerings.
