From the Office of the Dean |

Happy Monday to the CHDCM community!
I hope this edition of the Dean’s newsletter finds you all as well as possible at this hectic time of year!
As I write these words, the calendar has turned to October, which means we’re already work recruiting new graduate and undergraduate students to CHDCM and to Seton Hall—while still rolling out an exciting lineup of events, initiatives, and programs for our current students! One example: renowned journalist Peter King, our Fall 2024 Professional-in-Residence, has already taught one master class for our students, with his next one coming up tomorrow (see below for details and a link to RSVP)! Speaking of our Center for Sports Media, Executive Director B.J. Schecter is currently taking applications for our first Pirates in the Field experiential opportunity, Big East Media Day! There’s lots more to come as we get further into the academic year, so stay tuned!
And, of course, there is something else going on right now….midterms! I wish you all well as you finish papers, projects and exams—or grade those papers, projects, and exams—and would just encourage all members of the CHDCM community, as always, to practice self-care in these hectic times. I know that Fall Break is only a week away, but as you navigate the due dates and deadlines that separate now from then, make sure that you’re taking time for self-care. These times of year can be taxing on mental health, so please don’t forget the support and resources that are available from the University: Students can find dedicated resources through Seton Hall’s Counseling and Psychological Services, available at (973) 761-9500. Campus Ministry is likewise available at (973) 761-9545. Employees may use the Employee Assistance Program by calling (877) 622-4327.
With that, I invite you to read on, and enjoy the good news and shout outs from our CHDCM community. As always, keep your good news and event notes coming, and I wish you all a happy and healthy week of midterms, followed by a wonderful, restorative, and healthy Fall Break!

Congratulations to Dr. Dena Levine on making a markable contribution for students! Around 60 students from Dr. Levine’s Music and Civilizations classes attended a performance of two Bach fugues by John Nowik in Lewis Chapel. In the spirit of cross disciplinary partnership, the Music Program will be collaborating with the Department of Catholic Studies and the School of Theology to offer The Practice of Catholic Liturgical Music this spring, a course taught by Mr. Nowik which is part of the Certificate in Pastoral Music Ministry.

This is Issys Ortega, a current Senior here in the CHDCM! She is a first-generation college student to two proud Dominicans working towards a B.A. in English and Secondary Education but her love for literature extends beyond academic pursuits. For the last year and a half, she has been working on a compilation of her poetry that she calls “Ailments of the Young”, and she asserts that it has been quite a lovely experience working on something is purely and uniquely her own. Seton Hall has provided Issys with many opportunities that she holds dear and at her time here, she has been inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, the First-Generation Honors Society, and just last month she was inducted into the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute as a scholar!
Outside of her academic endeavors, Issys is also involved in a few extracurricular on campus. She currently serves as the Vice President for the University’s Prospanica Professional Development Chapter, an organization that has advocated for Hispanic professionals for 35 years and whose mission is to empower Hispanic professionals to achieve their full educational, economic, and social potential. She is a student worker for the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute where she is a co-chair for their peer development program, and she is beyond excited to see how this program will benefit current and future underclassmen. She is also a singer and has been singing for 15 years, often singing at many JAULI events and she was previously a member of SHU’s Chamber and University choir, performing in projects like Candide and La Traviata!
Some fun facts about Issys are that she has a twin brother but they do not have the same birthday, she went to high school in North Carolina, but is from New Jersey! She was a summer camp coordinator this past summer and says she has learned so much about the profession of Education through that experience!
