Preparing for Academic Advising at Orientation
Academic advising at Miami University begins at orientation. During orientation, you'll hear from faculty about Miami's approach to liberal education, learn about the Global Miami Plan requirements for all students, the curriculum for your academic college and major, meet with advising staff/faculty from your area of study, and meet individually with an academic advisor before registering for classes. To learn more about what to expect during academic advising at orientation and how you can best prepare, view the Orientation Advising Insights webinar by clicking on the video below.

Review the New Student Guidebook
The New Student Guidebook is a reference guide that will introduce you to the Global Miami Plan (GMP) and help you navigate advising and registration before, during, and even after orientation. It not only explains the GMP, but lists each course that satisfies GMP requirements.

You will receive an abridged copy of the 2019 - 2020 Guidebook at orientation, but you should review the Guidebook online before orientation in order to be most prepared to register for fall classes at orientation.  In particular, we recommend that you focus on the following sections:
  • Understanding the Miami curriculum: pp. 16-19
  • Preparing for registration: p. 24
  • Determining credit earned and course placement: pp. 28-41
  • List of courses that meet each Global Miami Plan requirement: pp. 58-75 (with corresponding course descriptions on pp. 76-106)
  • Suggested first-year courses for each major: pp. 115-187
As you review the New Student Guidebook, write down any questions you have, and bring those with you to orientation.  Many of your questions will be answered during orientation presentations; you and your family can also talk with faculty and staff advisors at/after your Academic College Meeting on Day 1 of your orientation, so you'll be well-prepared to register for classes on Day 2.

Still need to register for orientation? No problem.
If you have not yet registered for an orientation session, please visit MiamiOH.edu/orientation. Orientation is required for new Miami students, particularly because it serves as the vehicle for student advising and course registration, and also because it helps students and families have a smooth and positive transition to Miami. If you have any questions, contact us by calling 513-529-9771 or emailing orientation@MiamiOH.edu.
