As we return to campus, it is important for us to return to a more structured, planned approach to our work. To that end, Student Affairs will be providing professional development opportunities around assessment, knowledge management, and more during the coming year. Re-emphasizing our goals, objectives, and assessments will help us move forward toward our new normal (post-pandemic). In addition, we need to gear up for our WASC report for 2025 and outline the critical initiatives we need to meet the President’s Imperatives over the next several years.
This short video course on Knowledge Management is provided to everyone as part of our professional development opportunities.
I hope you find it helpful.

Jimmy Velasquez '21 (Graphic Design)
Student internships on campus can be highly beneficial for students looking to expand their skills in their desired field. An example of this is Student Affairs Marketing and Communications intern Jimmy Velasquez. Velasquez started utilizing internships on campus through an open graphic design position in Academic Advising in 2019. As he progressed as a student at Sacramento State, Jimmy joined the Student Affairs Marketing and Communications team in 2020.
Regarding how these internships may increase his likelihood of obtaining higher-level jobs in the future, he said, "For sure, I know it is going to help me especially with networking, and it has helped me develop skills in the design sense and professionally."
Jimmy recently graduated from Sacramento State in Spring 2021 with a degree in Graphic Design and looks forward to his future in this field. His best piece of advice to students looking for an on-campus internship is to utilize the resources on campuses, such as advisors, as well as online research.
With abundant opportunities on-campus for students to enhance their skills and connect, we encourage you to tell students about resources that are open and waiting for student use. Not only can on-campus internships expand students' skills, but they can also lead to a bigger and brighter future in their career path.
"Student employment can be a great way to gain job experience, develop transferable skills, and engage with the Sac State community. There are over 70+ student employment opportunities currently posted in Handshake," said Employer Relations Coordinator for the Career Center, Kate Lockwood.
Students interested in applying for on-campus employment can visit Handshake and apply for open positions through the link below:

The New Student Center Has Arrived!
A new and improved mobile Student Center has arrived! The new Student Center retains all the same functionality of its original page but offers a new layout that is both mobile and tablet friendly, as well as offers an improved user experience and increased accessibility.
To support our students as the campus transitions to this exciting new platform, the Registrar, Student Service Center, Orientation, Financial Aid, and SA-IT collaborated with the Student Affairs Marketing and Communications team to create a series of how-to videos to walk students through the new Student Center. This video series currently features 10 video tutorials featuring topics such as general navigation, how to use your Sac State Scheduler, and more! Additional videos are currently in development.
These 10 how-to videos are located on the Sacramento State Student Affairs website and on the SA Communications YouTube channel for easy accessibility.

Coming in 2021, EMMA Editor Accounts!
With an eye on elevating the quality and enhancing the University’s communication strategy, EMMA (SacSend 2.0) was adopted in the Summer of 2019 to be Sac State’s official email campus communications platform. As the capabilities of this new platform were explored, the number of user accounts was initially limited. Sending messages was open to all departments and programs, but the role of sending divisional messages was allocated to Student Affairs Marketing and Communications. With two successful years of partnering with the division, Student Affairs is excited to announce the next phase, EMMA Editor Accounts.
What are Editor Accounts?
Coming in 2021, Student Affairs Marketing and Communications will be partnering with IRT and Division Leadership to identify staff in departments across the division to serve as editors. Editors will have access to EMMA via their MySacState page, and the ability to create drafts of messages directly in EMMA. Once messages are prepared, editors will submit their content to Student Affairs Marketing and Communications, who will then serve as content reviewers, double-checking grammar and spelling to ensure consistent language is used. If misspellings are found or grammatical edits are needed, Student Affairs Marketing and Communications will contact the submitting editor to make the change. Once messages are ready, they will be scheduled for sending.
How does this change the process for sending emails?
EMMA Editor accounts will be identified and created throughout 2021. As accounts are created, Student Affairs Marketing and Communications will be working with new editors on the usage of the EMMA platform and processes for preparing email messages. Editor accounts will increase partnership between departments by sharing the process of creating and sending email messages. Departments will be able to create messages in-house on their own timeline, and the division will extend support through grammar and content review, as well as strategic communications support.
Editor accounts will also help inform the usage and need for email communication throughout the division. All messages created by Student Affairs editors will be added to a division-wide communications calendar. Student Affairs Marketing and Communications will monitor the calendar and make suggestions on the best time and day to send in order to ensure your message gets to students and does not get lost in inbox clutter.
Next Steps.
As editor accounts are identified, Student Affairs Marketing and Communications asks that all departments and programs wanting to send email messages continue to fill out the Service Request form located on the Marketing and Communications webpage and at the link below.
If you are interested in being an EMMA Editor, please contact Student Affairs Marketing and Communications at sa-communications@csus.edu.

Establishment of the New APIDA Student Center Underway!
The Sacramento State Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) community is diverse and growing on campus and in the region. More than 23% of students identify as APIDA, representing 25 subgroups (Filipino, Hmong, Chinese, Samoan, etc.) speaking multiple languages and dialects. Led by Chao Vang under the direction of Student Academic Success and Educational Equity Programs (SASEEP) in the Division of Student Affairs, a cadre of 30 faculty, staff, students, and administrators are meeting monthly to help plan and implement a new Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Center for the campus community. Guided by the planning roadmap, 18 Student Focus Group Sessions, 5 Campus Updates, 5 Student Surveys, and 3 Preliminary Reports are underway. The comprehensive information will be used to identify interventions and develop services and programs to assist APIDA students academically and socially to increase their retention and graduation rate.
Students who identify as Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA), should be encouraged to participate in this survey. Their participation will contribute to our better understanding and growth of the APIDA student experience.
Please share the survey links below to contribute to this campus-wide effort:

Technology Needs for Hybrid Work (On-campus and remote)
Hello Student Affairs Partners,
Happy summer! We would like to take this time to provide some information on the technology needs you may have for the summer while transitioning to work on-campus.
Here is some information to help with the transition.
- Mobile Devices: If you use a mobile device, you will experience some flexibility to work from the same device while on-campus and remotely from home.
- Webcam: If you have a webcam already checked out, please bring it with you on the days you’ll need it on campus. Please Note: Your mobile device will have an integrated camera that works just as well as a standalone one. Place the mobile device in a creative way for optimal video capture.
- Headset: If you have a headset already checked out, please bring it with you on the days that you’ll be needing it on campus.
- Keyboard & Mouse: If you need a keyboard and/or mouse, one will be provided to you by our team for your campus setup. If you prefer to continue using the mouse and keyboard you have at home, feel free to swap them out.
- Monitors: We understand the need for dual monitors for many of our areas. Unfortunately, we do not have enough to provide 4 per staff member (2 for home & 2 for on-campus). We will be doing our best (with available devices on hand) to accommodate your needs.
Comments, Questions, Concerns?
Please contact us with any further questions or concerns about the IT equipment. Our goal is to provide an efficient and smooth transition during our return to campus.
Don’t hesitate and reach out via any of the following ways:
- Email: sa-it@csus.edu
- Phone: (916) 278-2745
