JHU Students Explore and Analyze Forests in Course Supported by Campus as a Living Lab |
What does it mean to “read a landscape,” and how has Hopkins Environmental Science and Studies professor Jerry Burgess spearheaded efforts to help students understand the history of our ecosystems and build a deeper connection with them?
In his new course, supported by the Office of Climate and Sustainability’s Campus as a Living Lab (CALL) grant, Burgess invites students to study forests as not just isolated systems, but as living landscapes shaped by deep history, human interaction, and ecological change. Through field visits to different forests, students interpreted ecological clues embedded in the landscape and built a personal relationship with the natural world around them.

Many students move off of the campus meal plan as they go from sophomore to junior year. How does taking responsibility for our own meals shape our eating habits, social time, and environmental footprint? |
For many students at Johns Hopkins, the transition from sophomore to junior year marks an important shift in daily routines. Students moving off campus often lose convenient access to dining halls, and begin taking on greater responsibility for their meals, including grocery shopping, budgeting, and meal prepping.

| - More takeout meals mean more single-use packaging piling up
- Higher food expenses can put extra stress on student budgets
- More meals eaten alone can lead to fewer moments of connection with friends
-
Cook with friends! Even if occasionally, preparing meals together can feel less overwhelming and help reduce reliance on takeout packaging.
-
Visit your local farmers market. Enjoy a morning walk to the market with friends. You can shop for seasonal produce in bulk. Not only will you save money but support your community. Just don’t forget your reusable bags or a small wagon!
-
Students can also get involved in cultural clubs at JHU! Many of them host cooking nights that bring members together to bond while sharing dishes that remind them of home.

| |
Sometimes sustainability starts with everyday choices, and a meal shared with friends might be one of the simplest places to begin!
