Hello there! My name is Mela and I am a current senior majoring in Neuroscience and Behavior with a minor in Latino Studies here at Notre Dame. I’m from Medellin, Colombia but I called Pasquerilla West Hall my home for my first three years in college, and now I’m in Fischer Graduate Residences!
I’m a premedical student, so a lot of my involvement has been in research, shadowing, and volunteering. My research at Notre Dame has been on memory and aging. I am currently finishing up my senior thesis which I’m really excited about! I’m also part of the Notre Dame Medical Observers club where I have the great opportunity to shadow a Family Medicine resident weekly at Memorial Hospital. For the past year I have also been blessed to volunteer at a free clinic here in South Bend called Sister Maura Brannick Health Center.
However, during my time at Notre Dame I have also participated in other things! I have worked every semester here in multiple jobs in OIT, dining, and now at the gym! I am also a part of many communities such as Galvin!!!!, Transformational Leaders Program, Building Bridges Program, Fighting Irish Scholars Program, Cavanaugh Council and President’s Circle Scholar, and the Hesburgh Women of Impact Program. I am currently on the board for both the Office of Student Enrichment as well as the 1st GND club.
During my junior year, I studied abroad in the Fall in Puebla, Mexico! I recommend to all students to get the experience of studying abroad and endeavoring in a new adventure!
Within Galvin, I am a member of the Galvin Leaders Committee as one of co-leads for the large events committee alongside Alex! In the committee I have the opportunity to get involved in many opportunities, but my main job is to help plan the Galvin Formal. It is such a fun job where we have the opportunity to get creative and plan a fun night to celebrate all Galvin scholars. Whether it be freshmen or seniors, everyone is welcome and guaranteed a fun time sharing with our community.
We are currently looking for volunteers to help us brainstorm, set up, and clean up for Gormal. It sounds like a lot of work, but it’s super fun AND you get to make bonds with fellow scholars. Through Galvin, I have made some of my most valuable friendships here at Notre Dame and have had some of the best memories (like studying at the Galvin’s Lounge in Bond Hall during our freshman year). Galvin has also supported me to pursue many opportunities that I couldn’t have otherwise during my semesters as well as in the summers! I am eternally grateful to be a part of a community to which I will always belong to and feel at home.
