Jeremie  Kubicek is the Executive Chairman of GiANT, which certifies coaches to serve companies and their employees. Before founding GiANT and Leadercast (and writing numerous books), Jeremie had one of those near-death experiences you see in the movies. It led him on a journey to discover that leadership starts with knowing and leading yourself. Once you lead yourself well, you can lead others.

Serving together: How Rotary raises awareness, connects us to the Community

by Charlie Price

As Rotarians, we recognize service above self as one of our core values. Our members engage in volunteer service along with thousands of like-minded individuals through chapters here at home and across the world. From helping local students and others in need in Oklahoma City to setting up vaccination clinics in other countries, that impact matters.

In addition to planned community service, Rotary also gives us the opportunity to hear from nonprofit sector champions. Servant leaders representing causes throughout our state help us better understand community needs. Knowing where to focus our time, energy and resources is also guided in the spirit of service with that improved awareness. I’ve joined many conversations with “We were just hearing about that topic at Rotary.”

We are better citizens and more informed residents because of our participation in Rotary. As an organized force for good, Rotarians have the advantage of long-standing traditions around community service. We host a forum for engaging conversations but the momentum doesn’t stop there. Words turn to actions when we choose to participate in activities in fulfillment of the seeds planted, with better days ahead.  READ MORE

ROTARIANS AGAINST MALARIA-GLOBAL (RAM-G)
by Dennis Shockley, Ph.D.
We carefully negotiated the small dirt passageways of corrugated metal and clumsily plastered concrete walls stepping over stones, interrupted by occasional sunlight, and arrived in a narrow alleyway where we were surrounded by about 50 bug-eyed, shiny headed small children of God. They were gathered there for what would perhaps be their only meal that day, rice, beans and flatbread. We were in the heart of Kibra, the worst slum town in Nairobi. Alice brought us here.
Last month I had the privilege to accompany 17 other US Rotarians to Western Kenya on a RAM-G educational and humanitarian safari. The goal was to learn about interventions against malaria in partnership with Rotary District 9212. The group was led by Dr. Dan Perlman, a retired epidemiologist and Rotarian from the Denver area. We were accompanied for the entirety of our adventure by Alice Atemo, a past president of the Kakamega Rotary Club. She is also the founder of the Overcoming Faith Schools for Orphans in Western Kenya. She rescues kids from Kibra, but is restricted in student body size by the government.   READ MORE

Rotary Magazine - March 2024

They're the missing link between farms and food banks: the volunteers who collect crops left behind in fields. Harvest Against Hunger takes it a step further. Rotary District 5030 in Greater Seattle serves as a model for addressing food insecurity, not by building new infrastructure but by forging so many connections between community partners that one farmer dubbed it "a benevolent octopus."

In another example of improving existing systems, polio vaccinators have a powerful new tool to fight outbreaks: cellphones that track their progress as they go door to door, ensuring fewer children are overlooked. In the Our World section, learn how polio mapping is going high tech.

March is Rotary Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Month. In the "Where are they now?" column, we introduce you to a Rotary scholar who has made it her life's work to expand access to safe water.
