The Old Florida, with the Grandest Golf
The Senior Golfers have been traveling to the metropolis of Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, (population 1175) since 1982. They journeyed from several different states in March and found the picturesque and unusual Mission Inn Resort just as welcoming as ever. The golf courses, El Campeon and Las Colinas, were in perfect shape.
The event began with drinks on the delightful La Margarita patio, overlooking the golf couse and also Mission Inn's own osprey parents, who were building their spring nest while SGA was at the resort. A special treat was a visit from Pittsburghers Sue Arnold, Jeff Leech, and Gail Florence, who stopped by to greet the SGA event participants while on vacation at nearby Kissimmee, Florida.
Winners at Gross were fellow Pittsburghers (Yinzes?) Linda Thier and Gary Claus. "These courses are just beautiful," said Linda. "This is the first time Jay and I have been in the area, and we love it." The Thiers and Clauses had planned to stay longer in Florida, but had to hurry back to Pittsburgh to get ready for the Eagles "Hotel California Tour" which they all were attending at the end of the week. "Take it Easy...." sang Linda as she stepped into her limo to the Orlando airport.
"JoAnn and I have had a great time here this week with all of you, said Gary, "and we, along with Linda and Jay, especially invite you to join us at the SGA July event at Bedford Springs, Pennsylvania. It's a grand and historic resort, and the golf course is spectacular. Come and experience one of the many reasons we love Western Pennsylvania! You will have a wonderful time!"
Net winners were Tallahassee's Bob Cummings for the men, and Candy Pole, from Hollywood, Florida, for the ladies. Runner-up was SGA Veteran Ted Thranhardt, another SGA Floridian, who lives at Ponte Vedra Beach. Best Ball Team winner was the great team of Jay and Linda Thier and Candy and Dan Pole. Scramble Winners were Bill Cembor, and Bob and Es Cummings. The "One and Only!" Close to pin winners was Jay Thier. "Kicking it up a Notch" best-dressed winners were Bill Cembor and Loretta Thranhardt.
Congratulations to all!
