Dear Postdoctoral Community,

As we near the end of the semester, I want to recognize your hard work and dedication to your research programs and to Vanderbilt. We will be celebrating postdocs at our annual postdoc awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 24. We are excited to be able to celebrate postdocs in person for the first time since 2019. I invite you to join us as we recognize recipients of Postdoc of the Year, Postdoc Service, Postdoc Mentorship, and Faculty Mentorship. A time of celebration and networking will follow the ceremony.

Although the semester is wrapping up, there are still several events that you can get involved with during the month of May including the Vanderbilt Postdoc Association's Speak Easy Talk Series to tell your scientific story, the BRET Office of Career Development ASPIRE programming, a bonus Women's Center Work-Life Workshop, and the NIH Virtual Career Symposium.

Postdocs are the heart of discovery and scholarship at Vanderbilt. You are valued and appreciated. If there is anything we can do for you, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Postdoc Awards Ceremony and Reception May 24

The annual postdoc awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, May 24 at 4:00 in Alumni Hall. A reception will follow on the terrace. RSVP here.

Speak Easy - A Postdoc Talk Series to Tell your Scientific "Story"

Are you a post-doctoral researcher interested in polishing your “lay” scientific communication skills by giving a short 10-minute presentation to your peers and others in the Vanderbilt community in a fun and casual setting? If so, the Vanderbilt Postdoctoral Association invites you to join us for appetizers and a cocktail hour at our Talk Series event Speak Easy hosted in Vanderbilt’s Alumni Hall Graduate Student Lounge on May 19th from 4:30-6:00 pm.

Dual Identity for VUMC Postdocs
To better serve the VUMC postdoc community, all VUMC postdocs will be obtaining dual identity. Dual identity is for faculty, staff, and postdocs that have affiliations at both Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center and require access to systems or resources owned by both.

VUMC Postdocs will receive a separate email communication in the coming week with more information on how to claim your dual identity and manage your VUMC and VU accounts.

15th Annual NIH Career Symposium

The Annual NIH Career Symposium will take place virtually May 11-13, 2022. Each day will start with an intro on each sector (career options, being a competitive applicant, resources for success), then you will have the opportunity to network with professionals in a variety of jobs and participate in information interviews.

The 16th Annual Postdoc Symposium has been scheduled for Thursday, October 27, 2022. Be on the lookout for more information.

Get Invovled with the National Postdoc Association

The National Postdoc Association (NPA) provides many resources to postdocs around the country, as well as provides support to postdoc offices. Postdocs can get involved with the NPA by becoming a member, joining a committee, or taking part in webinars like the SmartSkills workshop.

As a Vanderbilt postdoc, membership is provided. Use this link to become a Vanderbilt affiliate member.

Employee Affinity Groups

Employee Affinity Groups (EAGs) are open to all Vanderbilt employees, regardless of identity. Staff, faculty, and postdoctoral scholars who identify as part of or have a close affinity to these groups are encouraged to attend.

Nature Masterclass

Nature Masterclasses are developed by Nature Research and provide professional development training for researchers by drawing on the expertise of Nature Research journal editors and experts. Faculty, staff, postdocs, and students of Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center are free to sign up at https://masterclasses.nature.com/.

Updated Health and Safety Protocols

Vanderbilt University will no longer require masking or physical distancing indoors. Individuals will have the option of wearing a mask indoors, including in classrooms, offices, labs, dining, and community spaces. Testing for asymptomatic individuals continues to be available for all members of our community at the Vanderbilt Testing Center in the David Williams II Recreation and Wellness Center. For more information on University protocols, visit the Health and Wellness website.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center continues to require masking in clinical areas where patients and visitors are present. If fully vaccinated, masking is not required in non-clinical areas. Other information on Covid-19 can be viewed on the VUMC Clinician and Employee Guidance website.
