While public attention has been focused on the Brexit negotiations, the European Union (EU) confronts further challenges that will shape European politics in 2019. These include defining EU policies towards global powers such as the United States, Russia and China; protecting and developing multilateral institutions; finding joint responses on issues of migration and refugee policy; dealing with populist challenges, especially in the upcoming European Parliament election; and responding to undemocratic tendencies in some of the EU’s own member states.
In conversation with CES Co-director JoanDeBardeleben, Niels Annen will reflect on these challenges and outline policy responses preferred by the German federal government.
Niels Annen is Minister of State in the German Foreign Ministry. He has been a Member of the German Bundestag since 2013, and previously 2005-2009. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) since 2003. He holds a Masters degree in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University.
