| Summer Scholar Orientation
Monday, May 6, 2024
8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
2204 Kirkhof Center

KEYNOTE: CENTERING HUMANING, UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF TRAUMA, AND MOVING FROM IMPOSTER TO RESISTOR
This workshop will allow participants to engage in a deeper dialogue around Imposter Syndrome through team building and small group activities, individual reflection, and large group discussions. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the origins and reflect on ways to challenge the organizational practices and norms that allow for one to question their legitimacy. Finally, participants will learn about strategies to reframe the construct of imposter syndrome, while doing work to enhance agency aid in individuals to shift from feeling like an imposter to resistor. This topic is incredibly relevant because of both the interpersonal opportunity to aid someone in shifting toward being a resistor and the ability to address the cultural practices, policies, systems, structures, and beliefs that allow some to question their inclusion and legitimacy. Facilitated by Drs. Thomn Bell (’04) and Elizabeth LaFray from University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

| Affiliate Faculty CURE Learning Community
The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS) is offering an affiliate summer learning community focused on course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). The community will be facilitated in an online format by Anna Hammersmith, OURS faculty fellow. The dates and times of sessions will be based upon participants’ schedules and availability. Additionally, faculty will receive $150 of professional development funds for participating in the community. Please find the FLC description below:
Universities are increasingly recognizing the immense value of providing students with research experiences that go beyond traditional classroom learning. However, one-on-one undergraduate research experiences can be time consuming, and not scalable to most students. Incorporating undergraduate research into coursework is one strategy to increase student access.
This community is geared toward Affiliate Faculty who face unique circumstances, such as teaching a higher number of courses each semester. In this community, we will explore how to incorporate research into the classroom experience, specifically focused on Affiliate Faculty. We will share ways other GVSU faculty have embedded research experiences into coursework and how this could be adapted for Affiliate Faculty. In this community, we will also strategize ways to envision undergraduate research experiences within Affiliate Faculty members’ specific courses.
If you would like to participate in the Affiliate Faculty CURE Learning Community, please click on the link below. Indicate your interest and availability to participate.

Q: I'm working with an outside collaborator on a human subjects research project. Do we both need to submit IRB applications?
A: Most likely, no. Most universities, including GVSU, are often willing to "rely" on another IRB's decision. GVSU can serve as either the reviewing IRB (i.e., the IRB making the initial determination/approval) or the relying IRB (i.e., the IRB accepting the reviewing IRB's decision). For more information about reliances, including how to request one, please visit the IRB Reliances website.
