Let's Show 2023 We Mean Business, Gateway85!
Happy New Year! January 1 saw the official start of our new calendar year, and the Lunar Year began anew on Sunday, January 22.
Tim Le and I are looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments of the county on February 3 at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce’s 75th Annual Dinner, where we will both be honored to receive a Public Service Award for service to our community. Tim is a dedicated member of our CID board as well as on the board of the Georgia Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce (GVACC). It is an honor to be recognized alongside his accomplishments.
As exciting as 2022 was, we are already hitting the ground running in 2023 as we continue to bring value to our businesses and improve our district.

Spring Will Transform Jimmy Carter Boulevard
The beautification of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and improvements to Gateway85 CID’s accessibility continues steadily. So far, the CID has facilitated the planting of 350 crepe myrtles along the corridor and we are looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labor in the spring.
To date, the CID is responsible for the installation of miles of sidewalk and walking trails within our boundaries – all of which continue to improve the district’s accessibility and provide added mobility options. Our current project along Dawson Boulevard is the most challenging sidewalk project the CID has ever undertaken due to the number of utilities, right-of-way constraints, and walls required, including retaining walls that vary in size from 4 to 10 feet throughout the project.

Legislative Reception at Eagle Rock
Gateway85 CID member Eagle Rock Georgia hosted a Legislative Reception on January 5, 2023. Numerous county and state legislators joined elected officials from the City of Norcross and our Gwinnett County CIDs to get acquainted and discuss issues within our local business community.
We believe there is great value in getting to know the people who represent the district and the state and as a result, we created a tool for our businesses to identify their local representatives to enhance their understanding of our district.

Last month, we focused on GVACC, a non-profit membership organization dedicated to creating a sustainable competitive presence for its general members while giving back to the Vietnamese community. Gateway85 Board Member Tim Le not only serves as a Parliamentarian on GVACC’s executive board, but also is a founder.
“The official creation of GVACC is one of my proudest achievements,” said Tim. “In many ways, we also act as guides for the Vietnamese second generation within the professional community.”
According to Tim, in the early 2000s, the Vietnamese businesses in the community held an annual party and networking event during the Lunar New Year. Tim spearheaded the expansion of the Vietnamese business community’s involvement from an annual party into an official organization with a mission to support its members and the Vietnamese community. In 2010, GVACC was officially formed.
Tim’s duties do still include organizing the annual Lunar New Year networking celebration, as the event is a mainstay. Gateway85 CID sponsored this year’s event which took place on January 14.
The event included an awards ceremony for member businesses that had significant achievements in business while supporting the community. Three of GVACC’s award recipients are located in or have locations within the district: 1st Senior Center, Atlanta Beauty Academy and Nguyen & Pham LLC.
Tim’s position provides a unique perspective on Gateway85’s purpose and functions. While he maintains a focus on the Vietnamese community, his appreciation for the CID is holistic.
“The entire community benefits from the work performed by Gateway85 CID. They depend on it.”
In particular, Tim pointed out the drastic traffic improvement provided by the diverging diamond interchange and the ongoing traffic infrastructure improvements facilitated by the district.
“The CID does an amazing job, especially for such a small team, to improve infrastructure, security and streetscapes in our district. Future improvements will continue to help everyone.”
Areas he hopes to see receive attention include Oakbrook onto Jimmy Carter Boulevard.
“Improved access to those businesses (along those corridors), and a reduction of unrelated or dangerous traffic in the shopping areas, will help support them.”
Beautification improvements, particularly in areas with previous reputations for crime, also improve conditions for existing businesses of all sizes in the area, as it supports returning customers and prosperity.
Tim’s hope for the CID is to introduce improvements to existing sites to make them viable for redevelopment. “Improving existing business sites with infrastructure like retaining ponds would allow them to meet code requirements for renovations,” he said. “Existing owners would be able to improve their business in a meaningful, obvious way, or attract companies that specialize in improving blighted shopping areas.”
These suggested improvements are inclusive of both large and small existing businesses.
“GVACC and Gateway85 CID both benefit from a diverse mixture of national brands and minority mom-and-pop businesses,” said Tim.
GVACC encourages involvement from businesses of all sizes and service areas to get involved with the chamber, as cooperation and inclusivity in every sense can support our communities, businesses and futures.
