A Window into Campus Life

During Fall Break in October, several UP students participated in immersion experiences through UP’s Moreau Center for Service and Justice. The above photos show students visiting Washington’s Yakima Valley, where they experienced agribusiness firsthand, volunteered for Northwest Harvest, and learned about everyday realities for undocumented farmworkers. The lower photos show students visiting Portland locations such as the Northeast 33rd Community Farm, First A.M.E. Zion, and the Urban League. They explored how issues such as civil rights, education, and immigration have impacted the community and what the local response has been. Visit the Moreau Center's website to learn about other opportunities for students!

'Tis the Season to Network

The holidays are fast approaching! As many students spend time with family and friends during winter break, they may feel unsettled by well-meaning questions about their future career goals. Our partners in the UP Career Center help students demystify networking and encourage them to embrace this time to start building professional relationships. Learning to Practice Self-Care

As we approach the end of the semester, your student may be starting to feel the stress of final projects and exams. Megan Cohara from the UP Health & Counseling Center provides some tips on self-care and school/life balance to share with your student. Read them here.

Season of Giving

Did you know that more than 30 students work for the Telephone Outreach Program (TOP)? They play a vital role in connecting with members of our Pilot community. During this season of giving, TOP callers will be reaching out to parents to provide updates on campus life, share information about our current fundraising campaigns, and ask for advice on how to make the most of their time in college. Read more to meet some of our TOP callers!

What We're Reading

Each year, the University of Portland celebrates literature by inviting students, faculty, and staff to read “one book together.” This year’s selection is Let the Great World Spin. A period of on-campus reading and discussion will culminate with a public lecture by author Colum McCann on February 20. The book constructs a vision of New York in 1974 as the people of Manhattan are surprised by a mysterious tightrope walker suspended between the Twin Towers. Ask your student if they are participating in ReadUP, and consider reading it yourself!
