Developing global leaders together. Education abroad news February 2020
Dear Colleagues,
There are so many moving parts to a travel program—personnel, budget, student applications, logistics, risk management to name a few—that it is easy to pay less attention to a program’s academic components!

What do we want our students to learn? How will we use the travel locations to facilitate student learning? How will we prepare students to develop intercultural competence?  How will we assess student learning? These are just a few of the many academic questions we need to consider when designing a travel program.

Recommendation #4 of Miami’s Strategic Plan calls for Miami to become a teaching & learning national resource. Hopefully, during this process we also will develop a set of teaching and learning best practices for education abroad and away programs.  The Spring 2018 Faculty Collaborative can serve as a foundation for this endeavor.
Sincerely,
Dr. Ryan Dye

Dave McAvoy

Global Learning Coordinator

As the Global Learning Coordinator, Dave collaborates with faculty on the curriculum design of their programs to uphold the tradition of intercultural enrichment Miami has worked so hard to build in its faculty-led study abroad options. He also assesses the impact of those programs and builds courses that prepare students to be as successful as possible in their studies across the world. Here are some fun facts about Dave:

  • Some of my first experiences abroad were studying literature, history, and culture in London as an undergrad...
  • .. and those experiences were so formative that they inspired me to get a dual-Ph.D. in Shakespeare and cultural studies at Indiana University.
  • While I'm new to the main campus at Miami, you may have seen me at the Middletown campus sometime in the past several years, teaching English and film classes and advising faculty who wanted to build community engagement into their classes.
  • The biggest surprise my travels have had for me so far is how much I loved the daily rhythms in Spain: the general sleepiness of the culture during the afternoons provides a wonderful opportunity for quiet reflection. Spain also introduced me to tortilla, a potato omelet that is absolutely perfect in its simplicity!
  • My favorite place in the world is Venice: breathtaking beauty greets you around every corner, adding a poetic feel to the experience of getting lost in its narrow alleys and navigating its labyrinthine canals.
