Colton's story: Multiple cardiology and surgical teams provide coordinated care for hypoplastic left heart syndrome patient |
When baby Colton was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) at 18 weeks gestation, his extensive care team began to assemble. Mayo Clinic Children’s Center and Children’s Minnesota collaborate to provide a team approach to caring for children with congenital heart disease (CHD). The Mayo Clinic & Children’s Minnesota Cardiovascular Collaborative enables both health systems to share expertise and knowledge to improve the outcomes for children with serious or complex heart conditions. The pediatric cardiology team at Mayo Clinic confirmed the diagnosis of HLHS, a rare and complex congenital heart disease.
As the next step, Colton and his family were then referred to the Midwest Fetal Care Center (MWFCC), a collaboration between Allina Health and Children’s Minnesota, and a national referral center and regional leader for fetal diagnosis, fetal intervention, and comprehensive fetal care for unborn babies with complex conditions.
At MWFCC, the family met with Lisa Howley, MD, medical director of fetal cardiology at Children’s Minnesota to develop a care plan for Colton which would also include teams from The Mother Baby Center, the Cardiovascular Care Center (CVCC) and Mayo Clinic Children’s Center.

First pediatric iMRI suite in the nation performs 50 procedures in its first year |
Children’s Minnesota is celebrating one full year of being home to the nation’s first pediatric hybrid intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) suite equipped with both moving-scanner and moving-patient MRI technology in the same surgical space. At least 50 procedures have been performed at the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation iMRI Surgical Suite since it opened in March 2023 at Children’s Minnesota – Minneapolis Hospital.
This state-of-the-art neurosurgery technology allows our kid experts in the neurosurgery program to make enhanced clinical decisions using mid-procedure MRI scans directly at the point of care to improve patient outcomes. Features of the iMRI suite include:
-
Purposeful design. Surgical experts can seamlessly move the 16,200-pound MRI scanner directly from the facility’s diagnostic room into one of the neurosurgery operating rooms via a ceiling-mounted rail system.
- High-definition scans. The strength and clarity of the 3T iMRI scanner allows the neurosurgery team to locate and remove cancerous tissue.
- Real-time care plans. By detecting additional tumors mid-procedure, the neurosurgery team can remove remaining cancerous tissue, minimize additional procedures, and maximize their chances for a good patient outcome.
