AIR FILTRATION SYSTEMS IN NEVADA AND CALIFORNIA: INDIGENOUS INGENUITY |
Anyone living in the Western US is now deeply familiar with the effects of wildfire smoke. Increasingly frequent fires have caused a severe decline in air quality, an especially dangerous problem for houses on reservations which lack air filtration systems. Piercen Nyugen of the Estom Yumeka Maidu tribe studied the impacts of this smoke at the Center for Genomic Medicine at DRI in Reno, NV and decided to help provide a solution: DIY air filters. Read more about the project in a new story by climate reporter intern Robin Smuda, below:

Agriculture Highlight: Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Request for Applications |
AFRI grants provided by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) fund research, extension, and education programs addressing priority areas including plant and animal health, food safety, bio energy, agriculture systems, and more. The current request for applications is a great funding opportunity for tribal groups. Through this initiative the Diseases of Agricultural Animals program is seeking to establish a Tribal Animal Health Coordination Network to address the pressing issue of animal diseases faced by many reservation communities.
