This year the Vera Institute of Justice has issued two important reports.  The first, "Incarceration's Front Door: The Misuse of Jails in America" highlights issues surrounding local jails who are charged with detaining and caring for mentally ill inmates on a more frequent basis.  The report details local correction systems nationwide and how they are attempting to change the way all inmates are processed, detained, and released.
The second report, "The Price of Jails: Measuring the Taxpayer Cost of Local Incarceration"  focuses on how much is actually spent at the local level to fund correctional institutions, and seeks to help counties tally the actual price of their jails.
Six states raised gas taxes on July 1st - Idaho, Georgia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Nebraska, and Vermont.  Read the article by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) here.
